Hello everyone.
My MacBook Air (Early 2020 Intel) has been great since I got it this year; until just yesterday when it stopped working. It is running 11.1 and still has ~700GB of its 2TB storage free.

I went to turn on the laptop (without it plugged in) and it wasn’t responding. I was surprised since I thought I had charged the battery. But I went to get the charger, and once I plugged it in, it seemed to finally turn on. I then saw that my battery icon had a warning sign on top of it and said “Service recommended
Power source: power adapter
Battery is not charging”.

Unfortunately that was just the beginning of my issues. Since then the computer fan starts going about a quarter of the way through the startup/login progress bar, and it locks up after that. To get to the desktop (loaded with icons, a dock, menu bar, etc) takes about 20 minutes from when you turn it on. Once I’m able to finally get into activity monitor, I see that there is a kernel_task process (~560% CPU, 2 hours and 205 threads) that is killing the CPU and causing the fans to go crazy.

I have tried a few troubleshooting steps but I still seem to be having the issues. Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
  • Remove all login items
  • Boot into restore mode (cmd+r) and perform first aid on HD
  • Reset SMC following instructions on Apple’s website (although I tried several times and I don’t know if it worked)
  • Reset NVRAM following apple’s instructions
  • Booting using safe mode (still had same issues)
I have made an appointment at the Genius Bar but it is not for quite a while since they are backed up. I’m just curious if anyone has any other troubleshooting ideas that I haven’t tried yet in the meantime?

I could never have imagined this many software issues seemingly stemming from a battery issue... maybe it has something to do with the T2 chip?

Have you tried booting into recovery, erasing the disk and then attempting to reinstall the OS?
I’m trying to make a new backup now since I don’t have a copy of it on me at the moment. It will probably take all day but I’ll repost here once I have done it and let you know if that solves it! Fingers crossed!

I wish you well. You have done everything Apple would have asked, from what I can see.
