Any Authorised Apple Service Centre (you can check the UK site for these in your area) should fit a new drive for the price of it plus a small labour charge based on time. Fairly straightforward procedure, I'd guess they'd charge the minimum 0.5 hour, so you're looking about £30 or so on top of the drive.

You don't seem terribly upset... so... i'm hoping you had a backup? If so, GOOD! :D. If not, man... sorry... I had a drive die on me a few years ago with no backup... I'm super anal about backing up now.

In any case, what about sites like macfixit or pbmedic? They might offer rates slightly better than what apple offers.

not overly fussed as it was only really a second machine and had nothing on it....was dreading apple giving me some outrageous repair price like they have with my imac before.....bless em explained it was outta warranty by over 2 months and they still are doing it for free and replacing drive......imagine hp or dell ever doing that.......well chuffed and apple at meadowhall sheffield were real helpful !

AWESOME!!! I hope this will help reduce these whiners that say Apple's service sux. I always have good service from them. My best friend's white Macbook failed 2 weeks outside the warranty and the Apple store fixed it for free as well. :D
This doesn't happen all the time so it's still important to get Applecare. It's dirt cheap on Ebay.

For his next computer yes, but his MBA is out of warranty. :)

just replace it yourself if you don't want to deal with ridiculous repair charges. if you want to then send it to Apple. it's that simple. you could look for a in town computer shop but honestly... that's a waste of money for how easy it is
