I have the base level MBA 11"... and I have a password lock on it... when I open the lid, the instant on function isn't so instant... takes a while for the password screen to pop up.. then takes a bit longer for the trackpad to start working... and then takes some time for my password to register... is there something wrong w my MBA?

I have notice the instant on technically is not instant in that it usually takes about 1.5 seconds. In my mind this is just fine but I can see someone saying 1.5 seconds is not instant. It sounds like you are saying its taking quite a bit longer which would definitely bother me as well.

Impossible to determine with all the subjective phrases you used.

if it was instant-on, you should open lid, instantly type the password+enter and within less than a second be in your desktop.

to the OP: it's not instant. waking from sleep in the mba is pretty much as fast as waking from sleep in an HDD mbp (true story).
my 2008 15"mbp boots from sleep within 2 seconds upon opening the lid. i don't see the air being that faster, maybe 1 second instead of 2?

edit: my toshiba windows 7 laptop boots from sleep in 2 seconds too :) and it has no SSD. the sucky part is that sleep in windows takes soooo much battery compared to the mac sleep. sorry for going off-topic, i'm just pointing out that there's no instant-on on the mba... it's pretty much as any other laptop/notebook.

That's true. I've never noticed that my Air wakes from sleep any faster than my 13" MacBook Pro with a regular HDD. Usually, it's about two seconds; sometimes three or four. Perhaps it's faster when password login from sleep isn't enabled, but I've never tried it.

They aren't instant, and can in some situations take a while. I know when I've had an Eclipse instance and chrome with 15+ tabs open, coming back from sleep can take a good ten to fifteen seconds.

I'm not sure why apple marketed the instant-on feature anyway. Apple's implementation is no different to what all computers have done for about a decade now. It sleeps to memory, then saves to the disk after a certain period (known as hibernate to Microsoft). They just slapped an SSD in there and gave it a name.

This entire thread feels like a troll. I guess it's better than thread number 1287 on when are the new airs going to be released, or will the MacBook Air make coffee and allow photo editing.

My experience of 'instant on' genuinely depends on how long it's been sleeping.

If I've recently closed the lid, as soon as I open it, everything's on within 1 second.

If it's been an hour or more, it generally takes a few seconds to get started.

When I remember and wait, it isn't too bad. When I forget and try to do things right away - This delays the instant on by another few seconds.

I do not have one but I was in the store and I would close the lid and wait maybe 10 seconds and then open and it would be instant so I assume that it depends on how long it sleeps like someone else said. Not sure I tried to type right away. Maybe I will test more next time. I have switched to a Mac Desktop and my next Laptop will be a Mac and was hoping instant on was like my iPad. Maybe they will change this in the future. Maybe we need iOS on a laptop (sorry about that).

Open terminal under root or admin and type each of these lines in one at a time.

sudo chown root:admin /
sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel
sudo kextcache -system-caches

Each one will take a bit of time to complete.

Restart and test results.

I know what the OP means... I happen to have the same issue. If/when the wake password is enabled it takes a little longer to wake up, and doesn't seem that instant is so instant, however when the wake password option is turned off the instant instant on is back on and as soon as I open the lid MBA is ready to use.

For me I rather have the extra layer of security, and I've learned how to live with it... until now, thanks for reminding me... it will bug me all over again

This is definelty the case with me as well.. Without the password lock, the screen lights up instantly as I open it up.. but the password lock really slows things down...

When I say instant.. i'm thinking on the level as my iPad...

Mine is instant less than a second. I am sure what kind of instant speed you are looking for.

People are hard to please...

There's 2 sleep states, like every other Mac has.

- The instant-on which is sleep. Every Mac has this, every Mac is "instant-on" in this state and this is what you're saying. This takes less than a second. On the MBA, this state is the one of the laptop is in for 1 hour after closing the lid.

- Hibernate. This on HDD based Macs takes about 20-30 seconds to wake up from, shows you a grey screen with a scrollbar. On the MBA, this state is replaced with Deep sleep, which enables 30 days of stand-by time on the battery. However, waking up from deep sleep takes about 5-6 seconds, where you're staring at a black screen.

The MBA isn't any more instant-on than any other Macs. They are all instant on, have been for the longest time. My unibody Macbook was quite instant on. The difference in the MBA is the deep sleep/stand-by time, where incredible stand-by is achieved yet it only takes a few seconds to wake back up from that state.

It is not "instant-on". It's not a question of whining or "not pleasing people", it's just how it works. Yes, the marketing around the "instant-on" thing was poorly done, we all noticed the longer wake times after 1 hour.

So let's not just "jump to Apple's defense!" or call people "trolls" because they say things when you guys obviously don't understand what is being discussed. Get educated on the issue and dig deeper to find the cause and you'll see this is perfectly normal.
