Is there a solution to this? The HDD itself is fine: it works normally with two of my Intel Macs and one PowerPC. With M1 however OS struggles to read it, it may or may not get mounted, and then even if mounted, it get disconnected in a few minutes.

You haven't posted enough vital info. What macOS is installed on the M1? What M1 computer is it? How are you connecting the external drive to the M1 (whatever computer it is?) I suspect this is the real issue.
What format is the external drive and what enclosure?
None of the modern macOS versions, Monterey, Ventura, and Sonoma, should have any trouble reading any Apple formatted HFs+ HDD, if the cable is good and the connection is secure and stable.
Simple test, use a different cable and/or port. Apple Silicon Macs, like my M2 MBA, have USB-C/Thunderbolt 3/4 ports.
How are you connecting that HHD?

MacBook Air M1, macOS 14.1.1, connecting over USB-C (there are no other ports anyway).
I tried two cables – one which Apple provided with a charger and a regular random USB-C one from a computer store. Both exhibit the issue.
The HDD is USB-powered Lacie, also using USB-C port.

Some googling has shown that the problem seems to exist with some Apple Silicon laptops and may not be related to partition scheme.
