Hi there !

As the title suggests, I recently upgraded from a MacBook Air M1 to a MacBook Pro M4 Pro 14/20 with 24GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.

My needs are fairly basic, but I still found myself in the orange zone with the MacBook Air. I also wanted to play some games so…

For now, my new MacBook Pro remains perfectly silent, with maximum temperatures of 45/50 degrees Celsius (3D games emulation).

However, I fear for the future (next 5 years) with 24GB of RAM.

The cost of the machine here in Europe is quite high at 2,949 euros, although I managed to deduct just over 740 euros by selling my MacBook Air and my iPhone 11, both in mint condition.

Final cost : 2,209 euros.

Would you still advise me to pay more to upgrade to 48GB of RAM ?

Or, for the same price, and with the return window, I can swap with an M3 Pro 11/14/36 which still has 1TB of storage.

I'm interested in your opinion. Thank you !

I'd suggest that you don't plan on pushing to 5; keep the 24 GB you need today and if your needs start growing in the next couple of years, trade up to an m5 or m6 with more RAM at that point. You'll get decent money for your m4 in 2-3 years and won't be paying for an m4 with memory you don't need today; pay for that along with a better machine when you need it.

As the poster above me says keep what you have. Unless your memory pressure is going into yellow now then you bought the wrong MacBook. In three years, the M6 will be out and you can trade it in for that with more RAM

Thank you both ;)

My memory pressure remains green and very low in the graph, with multiple applications open. As for games, I don't know yet, I'm slowly exploring.

As for resale, I'm not sure what this configuration will be worth in three years, since I'm going through an Apple-like in-store trade-in, not through buyers.

I feel a little guilty about spending over 2,000 euros, but I'm still happy with this all-in-one. I'm going to need some time.

I also don't really know what I own, as I was under the feeling that I was buying a monster of power, but looking at what other people are buying, I'm afraid I made the wrong choice.
