MBA needs parts...but not exactly sure what...

My g/f has a MacBook Air 1.8GHz and the other day she accidentally spilled alittle bit of water on the keyboard.

I go to look at the computer after opening up the bottom panel to let the unit air dry for a day or so without turning it on.

As i turn on the machine, the system boots up, however the backlight is not coming on. i can see everything in the backround loading up but i have to shine my lamp over the screen to barely see it. (i own a MB 13.3 unibody so i know how the LED screens work)

The question i have is this.....i checked online and apparently there is no inverter on the MBA screens since there LED and all the signals are by one cable connected to the logic board. What would possibility be defective? would i need a new logic board OR new LED screen?

The warranty is set to expire on the 9th of this month (Sept). but i did read that water damage is NOT covered under the limited 1 yr warranty and obviously she has no Applecare on this unit.

Any suggestions? If i decided to fix it myself and bag even checking with Apple, were should i start first?

if the screen is bad, http://www.screencountry.com has them for $130

if its the logic board it could get expensive.

i would have to rule that this would be a logic board issue, but thats just my guess.

there wont be much you can do unless you have another lcd to test with.

For some reason i think you might be right, i forgot to add that i don't hear the clime sound when turning on at all.....the keyboard is still working...but i don't think the back lighting is working too.....wouldn't the back light come on when i boot into the OS X CD (connected with USB S/D)? (i formatted her drive since she was getting the kernal panic a few seconds after the apple logo showed up everytime we boot it up).

Logic board....yup....should i dare take it to the apple store then? I only have until the 9th (pulled up the S/N) ....or will they probably just give me the reach-around?

never hurts to try,

if the moisture sensors havent gone off then you might get lucky....but other wise if they have, they just wont cover it.

you may as well take it in to a genius bar before the warranty expires. Perhaps there's a chance the water didn't land on LSI sensors, and you will get a free repair via Applecare.

I suggest you take it fully apart. Let fans blow across it in a dry area. Give it a full week before putting back together.

I honestly think your logic board is still damp. Really this is true, people should leave a computer off for a week after water damage. I have seen this myself. You may have ruined it by turning on early.

To all of you out there who spill on your Mac. Turn upside down. Shut it down immediately. Take apart and let air dry for far longer than you want - at least a week. I have experienced this myself. My friend is an electrical guy and told me that people ruin their electronics not by spilling on them but by not letting them dry long enough before turning back on.

I had a Dell that I spilled on. He told me what to do. After one week I put all back together. Didn't work. He told me put fan on it and wait another week. After that everything worked perfectly. So I advise this to everyone. Don't give up on your computer but take it apart and fully dry it for at least one week.

Well after putting it back together last night, i got the system to fire up, reloaded OS x via Remote Disc Install, and everything booted up, so i noticed the defects i'm having, first only half of the keyboard is illuminating and the other half is completely dim but you can see it light up just a little bit, then the screen is still dark, you can see the brightness indicator on screen show up, but obviously the led's don't turn on, i though the sound may have been damaged, nope i got it to do the BONG after reloading OS X.

so it seem that only the right side of the keyboard lumination is affected and the LED's on the screen are not coming on.

I'm taking it to the Apple Store in KOP today and see what happens. the sensors still seem to be working just fine when low light conditions.

might also be the LVDS, although most likely just the clamshell display
