Please apologize for the silly question. I am surprised to read that MBA could be replaced by iPad. But as far as I understand, these are completely different. As an example, can you install Office on iPad ? can you install Aperture ? I do not think so.

Please could you confirm ?

Many thanks in advance

It depends on what you want to use it for. I have both and find that the iPad is better for some things, but that I still want to take my MBA on the road at times to make sure I can edit photos or do something else that the iPad can't.

The iPad is a symbiotic device that requires a primary computer to activate, maintain and backup, and provides a host of specific functions in an ultra portable form factor in return.

I travel a lot and have enjoyed a MBA for years as an awesome travel computer. It's even been my primary computer for most of that time. But it's memory and storage limits prevent it from being my only computer.

Since I got my iPad I find myself traveling with my MB instead of my MBA but my MB spends most of it's time on my desk like a temporary desktop and my iPad provides all of my nutria portability needs while in meetings etc. Kind of the best of both worlds.

So in a strange way my iPad has replaced my MBA, just not in the way most would think of it. I wonder if something like the iPad will be the future of computing where everyone has something like this for most simple and common functions but then plugs into a primary computer periodically to maintain/backup or access more versatile/powerful computing services.

The concept of using something like this for most of the functions most people need most of the time and plugging into shared computers periodically to meed occasional needs outside the scope of an ipad like device is an intriguing concept.

I love when people act like it's the end of the world for posting the same question.

True. However, if one reads the forum rules there is no misconduct for replying that this is a duplicate thread while there is misconduct for creating duplicate threads. One can look at the posts to today's current threads in the MBA section and there are THREE MBA vs. iPad threads... this one is the identical title even.

Before responding to your post, let me address the subject of the thread and say that I have had an iPad since shortly after it was released. It does a wonderful job of light Web surfing. It's Netflix streaming client is outstanding, too. It's email client, though is not ready for prime time and its connectivity is essentially nonexistent.

In stark contrast to the iPad, the MBA, despite its diminutive size and light weight, is a full featured computer, which is capable of all but the most arduous tasks. In short, the iPad, as good as it is at what it does, is not a substitute for a real computer.

As much as I admire Scottsdale's knowledge of all things MBA and his willingness to share them here, I agree with you that his own repetitiousness in complaining about repetitive threads has become more of a distraction than the repetitious threads ever were. Unfortunately, Scottsdale succeeded in getting one of those similar threads moved to the iPad Forum and has repeatedly tried to do it again ever since. Here, at least, reason has prevailed and the mods have chosen to ignore him -- as they should, it seems to me.

Despite Scottsdale's wrongheaded stance on this issue, he remains a valuable asset here and I, for one, certainly appreciate his contributions. This just goes to show that it's impossible for anyone to be right all the time.:)

Show me a single second post where I tried to get a thread moved. I think it's RIDICULOUS when there are three current threads that are nearly identical especially when two of them had the EXACT SAME TITLE!

I had the same decision to make just recently. I still want an iPad and will end up getting one. But I want it because I'm just a tech guy and want to browse on the couch, read and store my books on it and eventually I want to get all my magazines on it.

The point is that I also wanted it to function like a computer. I'd have bought the BT keyboard to go with it ($69). I'd want the biggest 3G version (64gb - $829) for using the internet on the go, that adds a monthly bill too. The camera kit etc... Then I see the issue with printing and file sharing off a thumb drive.... All that.

Since I've wanted a MBA since it's introduction I found one at a good price on Craigslist and got it instead of the iPad. For the price I paid compared to retail I could buy a 32gb wi-fi iPad to go with it and still have $100 left.

No Flash

I really did not give a rats behind if iPad supports flash or not...until I went to demo an iPad and figured out how many websites I want to access with the iPad use Flash or Silverlight. I do not play games but would love to have an internet TV to watch sports.

Until Big Pond and ESPN3 have an iPad compatible streaming video format I will not buy one.

My hope is the next MBA comes with the same 3G chipset and data plan you can get with an iPad. I will definitely buy one of those.

Scottsdale, while your enthusiasm, knowledge and commitment to the MBA is passionate and has no doubt been a great help to others, myself included. Your blow-up about the email to Steve Jobs by another member coupled with your following post where you basically came out and said "I'm a provocateur first and macrumors poster second" not only bummed me out, it made me think that you have somehow come to the conclusion, consciously or not, that you OWN or should have the last definitive word on every post in this particular forum. Seriously, take a breath. You appropriate the rules when it suits you but you have posted the same type of post a hundred times regarding the MBA. I don't think I am alone on this one, whether anybody else posts or not.

heck, I want both,iPad and MBA (NEW ONE)

I am right there with you. It's not about iPad or MBA, these products are complements to each other not replacements for each other. And the biggest factor in the equation isn't the MBA confusing the placement of the iPad, it's the iPhone HD!

In truth, I feel a new iPhone HD and a new MBA is my favorite combo if I had to keep it to two Apple tech products. But with a .2 lb or less iPhone HD, 1.5 lb iPad, and 3 lb. MBA, all in my bag, I can still be happy and not feel any more bogged down than just a MB.

For someone who needs to carry a bag, the iPad fits fine. For a student the iPad can replace several books/textbooks. At home the iPad is perfect to lounge on the couch or in bed, or on the porch, to do the right media/entertainment focused job. But for anyone else, that's on the go, the iPad is just too big for the pocket and the iPhone fits just right. I will always have an iPad, as over time I figure it will find its own little niche in my tech portfolio... right now it's good for reading and personal viewing of TV (love ABC's app - once all four networks have this will be perfect) and movies.

As much as I want to love the iPad, it's just not the "perfect" product, and will not be until I can fold it up and put it in my pocket! The iPhone HD will fit perfect and perfect further communications and Internet on the go.

I am right there with you on the Flash bit. The problem is it's a GIGANTIC PROBLEM to the end user which Apple and Jobs leave out of the issue when they talk about just abandoning Flash.

Forget about the fight between Adobe and Apple for a minute. It's easy for Apple fans to say it's just a few advertisements, but it's problematic when the web is FULL of websites using Flash for far more than advertisements. I travel to NYC quite often for work, and a lot of restaurant websites I know of I cannot access from my iPhone because there's no Flash (I know, unfortunately, from lots of experience with it - and the ability to make a reservation on the go is a must). When I used an iPad for the first time, the first site I went to was Masters.org, and I couldn't even see the golf leaderboard. Flash isn't just ads. It's all over from animation of websites, to navigation of websites, to videos I want to see, and lastly to ads made by those wanting flashy ads not necessarily excellent coding. The problem with Flash isn't the code, it's the programmers who don't do the job right. There has even been research that showed html5 and h.264 isn't any better than Flash and h.264 enabled.

The biggest problem with no Flash on the iPad/iPod Touch/iPhone is that Apple is giving its users NO WAY TO VIEW VALID FLASH CONTENT! Apple has no alternative in place, so the user is stuck without web access.

I own an iPad, and I am buying two more iPad 3Gs for my kids this Summer, but it really disappoints me that Apple doesn't have Flash figured out... nor does the iPad have a forward-facing camera for video chat which is obviously just Apple waiting for the next update to force those of us who want a camera to upgrade. It's an obvious should have for this product right now, and it would have cost Apple $4. Instead we all have to pay $750 again next year to get the added $4 camera.

I have started less than 20 threads EVER on Mac Rumors. I don't know how I could be making so many duplicate threads when over two plus years I have less than 20 threads to my making.

I try to comment on everything if I feel like it warrants a comment. There is no rule about not commenting on very many threads.

At the same time, while I understand you are saying you don't think I should be posting as much or as frequently, at least you weren't a complete ass about it as others have been to me. I understand that not everyone is going to get along. I also understand when some people think someone who speaks out often must think he's a know it all or he's better than the rest of them, but that's not the case. I am bored, and this site gets my mind off of my miserable existence right now while I cannot work. And lately, I have been spending far less time here, because I am writing for another project.

When people add more I respond, I am not trying to get the last word... I am communicating further. I don't add nothing like a lot of people here either. Usually there's a thought or position behind every post I make. I love debating, and I use it here all of the time and it's meant as a DEBATE NOT THAT I WANT PEOPLE TO FIGHT nor call me names.

And I don't call people names or get into the trash talk of others. I do not sit and let people attack because they don't like me, but I am not calling people names like people have called me over and over again with no moderator action.

Lastly, I didn't mean to say that I want to provoke anything unless it's debate. I DO want to provoke debate, and I do that passionately, but I am not fabricating positions or feelings... I just like to debate and perhaps that doesn't settle well with everyone as some people DON'T like debate and just are reading to read. Believe me, if I could get debate without HATE, I would love to do it. A lot of people reply with hate because they don't like someone attacking their positions in debate form. A lot of people cannot accept that it's different than calling people names and attacking who they are as a person, as that's NEVER been my goal or aim.

For anyone that I have offended, I apologize, but it's never been my goal or reason for posting... all I try to do is enjoy debate not try to attack people or make them feel badly.

First, as you and Cheffy Dave both know, I have an iPad and really hope that the MBA will be updated so I can get it, too. The iPad and the MBA are, indeed, complimentary products.

Finally, although I have sort of led the charge taking you to task for your complaints about multiple threads in the MBA Forum, which have compared the iPad and the MBA, I did not think that any of your spirited responses were offensive. Were it that every poster could do as good a job as you of keeping personal attacks out of the dialog.

Let me clarify.

1) Scottsdale, without question, you have been a source of information and expertise on here and I am not the only one to appreciate it.

2) I think there has been some "ownership" issues that have probably been due to your impatience and hope, along with the rest of us, with regard to an update for the MBA.

3) I overreacted to your overreaction about the email to Jobs. It just smacked of everything I dislike on here, especially after your post after your freak out.

Thanks for all your posts and feedback. I just hope you can take a step back and that we all get what we want as far as a MBA update soon.

I mean this in the best way.

[Debate] vs [Not for Debate]

Thanks for all your posts and feedback. I just hope you can take a step back and that we all get what we want as far as a MBA update soon.

I mean this in the best way.

My point to the "freak out" as you said it was that it's basically a position of passion about debate. I don't personally lose sleep over someone emailing or not emailing SJ and linking our thread. I don't personally care if someone says the iPad is a billion times better than the MBA and is its immediate replacement. I definitely don't need to defend my "honor" or anything of the sort on these forums... meaning if someone disagrees with my view, I don't dislike it, I LOVE IT!

What I have come to realize is that those who "hate" me [Scottsdale] and want me [Scottsdale] off these forums, Robeddie, Soph, PscyhoJoe, Gwsat, Macmatician, Disavowed, Veinticinco, Entatlrg, and several others don't hate me [Dave] as a person because they don't know me. That was my entire point with that follow up post I made. What they see in my passionate desire for debate is obsession, and it doesn't bother me, because I am passionate about debate not obsessed with Apple. The one poster I have ever personally criticized on these forums was because of something I personally find disgusting.

Everyone else here can go on calling me a psychopathic SJ loving nutjob, and call me stupid and tell me I have no life, and it doesn't personally affect me as soon as I leave the forum. It doesn't truly concern me because they don't personally know who I am or anything about my personality. I guess that came off the wrong way when I said I don't give a damn what people think of me... because it's not me here. Not that I am not giving my own opinions, but I am dramatic about a position to further drive debate not to piss people off. I think that whole thing came across wrong. My point was I will take a position and dramatize the scenario for effect not that I want to make fun of people or take advantage of them for amusement.

I just wish everyone could understand that when people are debating it's NOT PERSONAL. A debate is NEVER PERSONAL. It's just a debate. When I am pro MBA and someone else is negative MBA, I don't think less of them as a person or call them names... but I wish they realized when I am taking a position of pro MBA that I am not personally attacking them I am debating their position. It's the process of debate... and that's where I go really wrong sometimes.

Some people don't like debate, and they're not here intending to debate, so they see debate as an attack not as enjoyment of people debating a topic. So when people go off and attack, I try to tell myself that they're just not into debate, and they took it personal when that was never my intent. It's difficult because on the forums we don't know who wants to debate and who is going to be offended when one wants to take an opposite position. Until recently, I didn't realize just how offended people get when I intentionally take the opposite position for effect.

I would really love it if whoever makes a thread now could label it, "topic for debate" or "topic specifically not for debate." That would tell us all what we can expect from the thread. If someone lists "specifically not for debate" or [not for debate] we can expect to only go to that thread listing "pro" reasons for the point of the thread. But when someone lists [DEBATE] we would know the whole purpose of the thread is to debate something. Perhaps this strategy would really prove effective for cheering on debate for those who wish for it and discouraging debate when some people only want people to agree with them. I personally think life's more interesting when we debate, but that's obviously made many people HATE Scottsdale, AKA my online version of me.

One more time - Sincerest apologies to anyone who has ever taken a positional attack (meaning against there position) as a personal attack as that's not my intent.

I appreciate how occasionaly irksome repetitive threads can be, but as someone who has been away from the forums for a month, and is curious about whatever comparison/contrast can be made between these two Mac products, I am actually interested in reading informed responses.

This means that when I saw the title, I clicked on it immediately, simply in order to read informed responses from ordinary people who have hands-on experience of both products; this is one of the things that (for me) makes MR such an interesting place to visit.

I have no comment to make on the other matter under discussion/dispute as I'm not au fait with what went on. However, I have always read Scottsdale's comments on the MBA with interest, especially as it is an intended purchase when my current posting comes to an end.

Cheers

I agree with you on all counts. The multiple threads comparing the new and fascinating iPad to the groundbreaking MBA have been of a lot of interest to me, too. Also, despite my disagreement with some of Scottsdale's complaints about the multiply iPad v. MBA threads in the MBA Forum, I deeply appreciate the knowledge he brings to bear here about the MBA.
