It will not be updated on the Ipod event. Best Buy is out for a bit but this has more to do with that they are not moving it enough.

I think it will be updated out of the blue with a custom processor that is not on the chart so essentially it can happen anytime, just not at the Ipod event.

Perhaps it is just sold out because Best Buy realizes that nobody is interested in buying such an outdated piece of hardware for such a high price?

Nice as it would be, I think it's more indicative of poor sales than an imminent refresh. They are probably keeping their inventory as lean as possible until the plug finally gets pulled on the air. I realise it was only her opinion, but an apple store worker once told me that the iPad is the new MacBook Air.

I work at Best Buy (in computers), and I know that my store has not had a non-open box/returned MBA (any model) in over 6 months, because they never sell; and if they do, they're returned. I personally don't think this is indicative of a refresh.

Availability elsewhere

To see how it compared to Best Buy here is what some other retailers are reporting on their web sites this morning, as of approx 9am PT.

Amazon: Both in stock with only 5 of non-SSD left at present;
MacMall: Both "Generally in Stock";
MacConnection: Both in stock estimated to ship today;
B&H: Both in Stock;
OnSale: Both "Generally in Stock";
J&R: Non-SSD out of stock and SSD shipping in 3-5 days; &
MacWarehouse/CDW: Non-SSD "Call for availability" and SSD in stock.

If anything, without being able to compare these to another point in time, it does look like that there is a shortage of the non-SSD MB Air at present but not to the point where current stocks are exhausted.

I'd hazard a guess that over the next month stock levels are going to drop and shipping times increase as we get nearer an October announcement and we'll see the increased rumours usually seen before new hardware is released.

Anyone with more experience of this care to weigh in?
