G'day all,

I'll cut right to the chase. Last night I closed the lid at 50% and chucked it in my bag. I took it out of my bag 2 hours later and it was boiling hot and the battery had drained down to 20%.

I think I may have found the process in the background that caused it but I’m concerned that there may now be permanent damage to the mac and it’s battery.

Is this something I should be worried about?

Not too much. Heat isn't good for batteries, but neither is anything else. Check the battery status in system report, and watch to see to see if it behaves OK.

As for the rest of the machine, I doubt it was damaged. It's designed to take pretty high heat for a little while.

I've had this happen to my Dell laptops, my MBA 2015 once, and ... thankfully, not to my 2017 MBP yet. I put the fans to my ear out of habit from owning Dell laptops that would boil themselves to death when closing the lid.

Just once? I wouldn't worry about it. coconutBattery should be able to tell you the capacity (though it would have been better to compare the before and after). https://www.coconut-flavour.com --- but you can use that to see the capacity of your battery.

I wouldn't be worried about it. Now if this was happening all the time for weeks, yeah, that'll have an effect.

Experienced this before. To be safe, put your MBP into sleep mode manually before closing the lid.
