Hello!

It’s time for me to upgrade my MBP 15” mid 2014.

I was thinking of buying the new model, MBP 16” M2 Pro 16gb/1TB, but I just notice a major discount on the previous model, 16” M1 16gb/1TB.

The new one cost exactly 30% more.
In terms of VFM, what do think is better to go for?

I mainly use Adobe CC — InDesign, Illustrator & Photoshop.

Thanks for the help!

Where did you find a good discount if you don’t mind?

Get the M1 if it's got a good discount! Its a very easy decision unless you absolutely need the relatively small increase in performance.

Unless you make your living using Adobe CC and every second spent waiting for the machine costs you lost income, the discounted M1 Pro is a better value than a new M2 Pro. You will need to decide if those extra seconds faster will justify a 30% higher cost.

Now, there's nothing wrong with wanting and buying a faster machine just for the sake of it. But if you're doing a serious value for cost justification, the 18-22% faster M2 Pro may not really be worth the 30% increase in cost.

The M1 Pro is still a seriously fast machine.

The M2 Pro's average of a 20% faster CPU and 30% faster GPU over the M1 Pro is quite a nice "relatively small" increase in performance.

I was in the same spot and went for a used M1 Pro 16" instead of going for the M2 Pro.

never would buy old tech its outdated from the start! Resale value will always be better with M2.
Agreed! The idea that buying an old laptop is more cost-effective than buying a new one is incorrect. The net loss from purchase to resale is similar in both cases. It's better to buy a new laptop and sell it at a lower price than buying an old laptop with a lower initial cost but selling it at a lower resale value.

in my case, i got a 16" M1 Pro 1TB / 32GB for 2100€.

An M2 Pro with the same config would set me back 3700€.

So i don't know :D that's 1600€ difference.
I doubt i'd be able to sell the M2 Pro that better than the M1 Pro.

Besides you can find decent discounts on the new chips, I was able to get $200 off plus another 5% discount on an m2 pro 1TB. same price as an M1 Pro 1tb 🙂 at other retailers

Indeed, opportunities for favorable deals are widely available, it is merely a matter of conducting thorough research and timing one's inquiries appropriately!

If you can find the M1 Pro/Max at a discount or better still, Apple-certified refurbished set, get it and don’t look back.

I've recently bought an M1 MBP (16", 16Gb RAM, 1Tb SSD) coming from a mid-2012 unibody and, to be honest, the jump in performance is so over the top that I could care less about the M2 Pro model. I bought the M1 from Apple's refurbished store for under 2,300€ This is a machine that cost 3,000€ when it came out in October 2021
I believe I saved about 1K by not buying the equivalent M2 Pro device.
FWIW, I intend to keep this new MBP for about ten years, if at all possible. I don't use any graphics applications, but do need the largest possible display that's still mobile.

Get the M1.
M2 has smaller heatsink, slower SSD speeds.
The smaller heatsink does not matter. The SSD isn't the base model, so it isn't going to be slower. I would still recommend the M1 if budget is a real concern, but definitely not for these reasons.
