Let me tell you all the whole story and ask your opinions...
I ordred a MBP in January when they were first announced. Got it in, had a blown right speaker, Apple sent me a replacement which I got in late April.
New machine sounded fine, but like many, whined. Sent it in for repair. Came back whine free with new logic board in July.
Decided to get rid of my Dual 2 G5 since the MBP was just as speedy. Bought a 30" ACD (refurb) to use in conjunction with my MBP.
30" ACD came in, had a few bad pixles and 'sparkled' with black backgrounds on my MBP. (Horizontal white, blue and green streaking lines.)
Called Applecare, sent me another 30" refurb ACD. This one has no dead pixels but still has the issue with black or dark backgrounds and horizontal lines.
Searching the web, noticed others having similar issues with MBP and 30" ACD. Someone posted a Youtube video showing it. Someone here having the same issue said he was told engineering was aware of the issue and 'working on it'.
So, I then notice my right fan making an audible baseball card through the spokes of a bike sound when it kicked into high gear. I call Applecare and set up a repair and also decide to mention the 30" acd issue.
I send the machine in with a full page summary of what's wrong. I note the 30" ACD does not misbehave connected to a mac mini or a PC (Although they only have single link DVI, the sparkling occured at all resolutions on the MBP).
I just get my MBP back after 10 days and they replaced the inverter. Needless to say, my fan still is making noise at high RPMs and it's still sparkling away on the ACD. The issues weren't resolved.
Where do I go from here? I have around $4000 of apple gear which is advertised to play nice together and, well, isn't. The sparkling issue appears only on dark backgrounds (or fullscreen mode in iphoto where black is around the photos.). It isn't there at first boot but will reveal itself within 30 minutes.
I'm reluctant to send it in for a 3rd repair only to find that it's still an issue. Do I ask for a replacement MBP? Does anyone have a 30" acd and a 15" MBP that doesn't do this? I'd scream if I got a replacement only to have the same problem.. Do I drag my MBP and 30" ACD an hour and 30 min. to Short Hills Apple Store? I just want working equipment!!
