I put in a 500GB SSD and 2x8Gb ram. Running Mohave and now just a reboot as soon as the home screen loads up. I can't get past this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Maybe faulty RAM? Don't think it would be the SSD , however can't be ruled out. I would run a memory scan on your ram sticks.

It works great if I put the 2 old ram back in, so that can rule out the SSD. I read something about updating the EFI, but it didn't seem to need an update. Also possibly something about the ram speed?

Defective ram.

You put new ram in, it reboots, take it out and put the old ram in, it works. Put the new ram back in, it reboots.

Its the ram

Well, I think it has something to do with the ram, I find it a rare coincidence that I get 2 brand new sticks of defective ram. It does the same with each stick. Sometimes it boots to the home page and reboots, the odd time I can move the cursor, then it freezes and reboots. I tried resetting the SMC and the NVRAM. I would try them in my old imac but I robbed the HD from it and my new one has the glued on screen. What I did just notice in comparing the old to the new is the bus speed. The old is only 1066 and the new is 1600. So right now I'm thinking incompatible ram.

Like maflynn said -- it's the RAM.

Suggestion:
Try ONE RAM stick (set the other one aside for now).

Try it in the top slot first.
Does it work?

If not, try it in the bottom slot.
Does it work?

If not, try the OTHER RAM stick.
First top slot, then bottom slot.

If NOTHING works -- send the RAM back.
I'd recommend that you stick with 2 4x4 = 8gb.
