Okay, So #6 is here. Fedex delivered it a day early. I've had it for just over 24 hours now. Here is my take...
a brief history..
Bought #1, a 15" Macbook Pro 1.8 the day they were announced. It got bumped to a 2.16 while on order. The whine was so bad that I had it replaced with #2 within 10 days.
#2 arrived and was pretty quiet, except it was so damn hot. I ended up selling #2 just after the 17" was released.
Bought #3, a 17" 2.16. It was cool, quiet and very sexy. But the LCD wouldn't stay open unless it was sitting flat on a desk. Yes, I know it's a "portable" but give me a break. Just moving it on the desk would cause it to flop backward or close. It was replaced with #4 just 12 days later.
#4 was perfect. Cool, Quiet, Sexy, Fast, and Stiff (that sounded bad...)
It was so perfect.. but it ended up being to big. I walk with it quite a bit. While it's open and running. (Scanning for wireless interference) The display was great! just too big for what I need... So, #5 was ordered when the C2D was announced.
#5 Arrived perfect. 15" Glossy 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB - PERFECT! This was my first glossy MBP. Wow - I LOVE IT. End of story! The last notebook I was buy for some time.. OKay - only part right... I didn't buy #6... #6 was a replacement.
#5 was killed. Well, not completely. Just the firewire ports. My wife's Macbook was in for repair because the firewire port didn't work. When I got it back, I put it into target mode to copy her data back... I plugged it in and I heard a "pop" from the MBP. The MBP froze and the firewire died.
Okay, so now the Macbook is back from repair again.. I haven't tried target mode... kind of scared to
So on to #6...
#6 has the same specs as #5. 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo, 15" Glossy LCD, 2GB, 160GB hdd, X1600 w/256M. Once again, Quiet, Cool, Sexy, Fast and clean.
Issues: The lcd was a little off when it was closed.. The much bitched about "gap". A slight "twist" of the LCD while open corrected that nicely. Gap is quite even now.
Graininess - Huh? I still haven't seen it 6 MBP's now - all perfect LCDs.
Noise? Nope. SuperDrive is a bit louder than before. But it's also faster.
Only issue I have now it that the battery isn't flush at the edges. It's not much, only 1/2 or 3/4 of a millimeter. Just enough to get your attention. It seems like there is something under it pushing a little.
Eh - no biggy.
Bottom line - it's pretty damn perfect.
