MBP 8600M GT Clock Frequencies / Overclocking

I finally got everything setup in Windows... and I'm getting a reading in nTune of 375MHz core clock and 502MHz memory clock.

Anyone else have anything different? I guess it's a bit below "stock" levels (475/700), but it's still a big boost.

Anyone doing much overclocking yet?

Well, the 8x00 series mobile chips dynamically underclock to save battery life, so changing the max clock speed shouldn't kill battery life unless you're using it.

No idea if you can overclock in OS X or not, though

Hmmmm, strange. They must have been comparing the X1600 on a 17" MBP to the new 8600. If I remember correctly, our 15"-ers didn't dynamically change the clock speeds on the X1600.

The Core Duo 15" model didn't, at least at release, but this is something that should be able to be fixed in drivers, so I don't know if it was ever added. I don't recall reading of it being added though.

More good news. Using Graphiccelerator, we were able to display the core frequencies of the ATI Mobility Radeon 1600 GPU while running OpenGL 3D games on the new 15" MacBook Pro. To our delight, the core clock jumped from 311MHz to 423MHz. The memory clock jumped from 297MHz to 450MHz. In the previous series of 15" MacBook Pros the clock speed remained at lower levels (we assume) due to cooling issues. Only the 17" MacBook Pros were up-clocking.

However under stock new 163.67 driver and 1440-900 res im getting 3950marks on 3dmark06. Which is better than any of the posts even with them using lower resolution. All the > 160 nvidia drivers have locked the core and memory settings, u will have to go and use the boot camp version if u want to overclock.

Under the stock apple bootcamp driver i was at 3700marks on a fresh install of xp pro.


I also noticed something kinda kool with the new driver while watching nvidia monitor that comes bundled with ntune.

Background, under nvidia control panel and performance settings i see an unchangeable core bus of 375 and mem bus 502mhz. However in the earlier mentioned nvidia monitor program the values go much higher than these.

They actually max out at 466mhz core and 632mhz memory under intensive GPU'ing. Which is pretty good for a mobile GPU.
