MBP and Video card differences?

I think the MBP has a x1600 256mb and I was reading a cnet report that said while playing doom it received 23.2 FPS while the Dell 1705 which has a x1400 256mb got 56.6 FPS.

What is the difference?

And why does it perform better?

If you read Cnet's review of the 1705, it says they tested the version loaded with the NVIDIA 7800 (seventh paragraph). That's where the difference is.

Oh I c... I've customized those dells before but never thought it was offered with a Nvidia; only ATI.

So how come the Nvidia is kicking the ATI's ass?
Is the ATI better at anything else?

ATI and Nvidia are like rivals. I don't know the schematics cuz I've only ever used ATI graphics. But I don't think Apple will consider using Nvidia.

I dunno, right now only NVIDIA has PCIe cards for the PowerMacs. If for some wild reason Apple decides to use dedicated chips instead of Intel inegrated crap, they may use NVIDIA again. Remember the 12" PowerBook had a 5200.

haha, Apple used to be 100% Nvidia until Nvidia leaked that the new PowerMacs would come with Geforce3 or something. Apple then opted to go with ATI for the PowerMacs back then.

Sad... reallly... My girlfriend just bought a 2000 Dell that actually looks pretty nice... but has windows... Its a 15 inch that has almost everything the 17 has or close enough to meet my needs and yes the GPU is running better. Well I would think since the 15 and the 17 have the same cards in the dell.

I know it sounds like I'm comparing the two but I'm not. I'm just saying I'm a little disappointed becuase I thought the 256 vcard was going to be pretty good and be just as good as hers...

I used to have a Dell. It worked wonderfully, but I was just genuinely dissappointed in it. I used it all the time for school and stuff. (Dell Inspiron 600m). I was disheartened when I heard from others that Dell has so far refused to issue a manufacturer's defect in the motherboard (or Logic Board as Apple calls it). And the fact that there was an electrical issue in an already messed up computer (BIOS messed up a few times and the fan stopped coming on). Just added onto it. The only time I ever got viruses was when I was networked at school. It also wouldn't be able to support Vista, and from what I've heard from some of the professors, they were saying they intended to switch to Vista and were going to require students to switch.

But when Intel came out with the new chips and stuff, I bought the Macbook Pro. I've been incredibly satisfied with it.
