Someone on the Applenova boards commented that Quanta manufactures the MBP as well as DELL laptops. If accurate, Apple has a high volume manufacturing partner. Why then does it take so long for shipment??? The dual core DELLS and others are available for shipping now without delay. Beyond the logic board and case, many of the components are stock "off the shelf" items that other manufacturers appear to have access to.

It really raises the question about Apple's ability - as an organization - to scale itself to Steve's vision. Here we are 6 weeks after the announcement and we are still dealing with virtually no supply for purchase at stores and 4 more weeks on new orders - makes you wonder.

Well, mine is shipped and it seems like a lot of them are shipping so what if it was delayed. Does Dell upgrade your CPU for free? How about giving you a free upgrade on the shipping? All that stuff was added as well as some people getting free gear when they were a little disgruntled.

The big reason why it takes Apple longer to ship things is because the demand is always extremely high for a new Apple product. When was the last time you saw any fanfare surround the release of a new Dell product? Apple is like the superstar of the computer world, and that is just how it is always going to be.

Shipping upgrades and some free trinkets are worth very little compared to production needs and multimedia presentations for clients.

The point of my post was simply to query why it takes Apple products so long to ramp up to higher shipping volumes IF one of their manufacturing partners (Quanta) also produces for DELL - which ships huge volumes compared to Apple.

Well, demand may be extremely high, but I still don't understand how 100% of 3% can be compared to 10% of the other 97%? That's assuming it is actually 10% and not more...

You need to be a little more clear as to what the hell these percentages are talking about. Because I have no idea.

spencecb - I think the numbers represent the market share differences. If 100% of we Macheads go out to get the new MBP - and we only have a small % of the market (3% or 25% whatever) the # of laptops is still way smaller than only a small percent of people ordering against a huge (75% or 97%) marketshare. Quanta is capable of and normally delivers huge quantities of Dells. Why cant Quanta produce larger volumes of MBP to meet the demand?

That demand is a large % against a small # - the Dell is a small % against a huge #.

That is the question we are kicking around - I think :)

Just talked with my dad. Asked him what's up with the MBP.

Apperantly there are alot of tooling issues that occur with changes in line. Everything from the casing (which he says is pretty difficult to make) to sourcing parts to the quality control issues that they face.

It is done by Quanta, and I think it's out of suzhou...60 minutes outside of downtown Shanghai.

My dad doesn't work for Quanta, but rather deals with them on a normal basis. He hasn't seen the MBP yet, but has heard about them.
