I bought a second battery for my MBP and I was wondering what the best way to keep them running at their fullest is. I want them to last as long as they can. I use my MBP mostly for school and on a day where I use my computer a lot, I'll run the first battery dry and then run the second battery to about 60%. If I calibrate the batteries every month, will this be a good system, or should I alter the system? Also, on some days I won't even go through my first battery, along with the second battery just sitting in my laptop bag during the weekends. What's the best system for them?

Apple recommends that you calibrate your battery every couple months and depleting your batteries is good because batteries have a limited charge/recharge cycle until it' no good anymore, so keep doing what you're doing and calibrate it every so often

Is it safe to deplete one battery all the way down to zero multiple times a week? I've heard on this forum that it's bad for the battery in the long run.

hrrmm.. i don't know about whether that's bad for the battery or not... i don't deplete them much, i usually wait for it to almost go into sleep and recharge it, i only deplete it when i plan to calibrate it which is once a month

Finally I have arrived.....
The more cycles the battery goes through, the weaker the battery will become. As long as you agitate the battery once a month or a few months, you would be able to prolong your battery life. My TI PB (over 4 years old) is still with the original battery and the cycle count is less than 50. My iBook is about 1 year old and the battery cycle count is about 15.
The most important point would be the first cycle. As long as you do the re-calibration routine (charge it up to the full, use it till you Mac sleeps, then, charge it back up to the full), you have set up the good foundation for longer battery life.
