mbp brightness "stuck"

hi all,

just now i mbp has started to have this new little issue...i can't change the screen brightness, but the weird part is that when i hit the keyboard buttons to increase screen brightness, the ghost image on the screen pops up to show that it's "changing" the screen brightness, yet it just bumps up to one filled in bar and then immediately back to empty when i release the button (F2).

ordinarily, when the screen brightness bar is empty, the screen turns off right? right now my screen happens to be at a fine brightness level, but i'm just concerned/curious why the brightness slider isn't working and how to fix that.

Guess what... Exact same problem here

I just joined this forum to find out why I have to send my MBP back for a replacement.

I took mine in today to the Genious Bar, they hooked up a external Hard drive to firewire, and it throws kernal errors.

So, when I called Apple for w/my case # after 30 min on the phone, the third guy told me to look up some errors in console. Well it turns out it is definately defective; and Apple is Replacing it.

My screen exibits exactly what you describe. Only when in is charging; close lid... open... lights up full blast... no dimming allowed...close lid...about 10 seconds of black... then it finally wakes to normal brightness.

Mine also is booting extreemly slow. Check your booting up blue status bar, if it is slow to boot you may have a defective unit. Call Apple, and ask to speak to them regarding the video processor on the logic board.

This used to happen on mine as well, but I did notice a few things about when it happened:

1. It was more likely to happen when I was in a brighter place after awakening my computer from sleep.

2. It was random in all other situations, but didn't happen too often.

3. It was more frequent in the first week, and then tappered off. After one of the software updates, it didn't happen again.

On that last point, update your software, and then see if it happens again. If the keys don't respond, try going through System Prefrences. Otherwise, it's a mystery.

This happened to me once after waking up from sleep. Rebooting cleared it up. Hasn't happened since.

I'll be curious if this turns up to be an actual defect or just some software bug.

This happens to me at night or day. It happens, and has been happening after about a month of use. I have tried, and called applecare which then came the "reinstall OS X". Well, that did not stop it either, and furtermore the bootup seems to be equally as problematic, as our macbook boot in about 20 sec, my MBP takes about 2.5 min.

Finally (as my MBP is 48 days new) it is going back, and I really never knew it was defective until the engineering rep investigated the crashes in the machine logs to tell me it was a know defect in the video module.

Here is what he wanted to find...
Under Console go to logs.
/Library/Logs
panic.log

At the end... Look for this

Backtrace continues...
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):

That was where I stopped reading, as there was more however he told me immediately that my machine qualifies for a replacement, not repair beyond the DOA 30 day policy.

BTW, mine was a custom configured 160 Gig version with the new santa rosa chip, so the Apple store by me could not exchange.
