Honestly, how many CD2 MBP owners machines have no case faults? I returned the first one I had because the top left half of the case was bent up. The replacement I recieved today not only has the same case fault, but another in the form of a gap just above the latch - between the outer case, and the palm rest, and a seriously unhealthy sounding optical drive, which I think could have been damaged during transport (dent in both the shipping box, and the MBP box).

Am I really just unlucky?

Returning my 2nd MBP for the exact same reasons+dodgy lcd and squeaking spacebar.

Yeah, I'll be returning this one when the phone line opens tomorrow, the only problem is I don't know if I can be bothered waiting for another one. I'm at university and can't keep waiting 7+ days without a computer.

I feel the same way and I dont know what to do. I asked for a refund. I might actually go in to a store and open a box and examine the hell out the machine before bringing it home, Im not taking anymore chances. I might give Apple a rest for now and return once they sort this out.

I bought mine in the apple store a few days after the announcement. When i open it up, the bottom right side doesn't sit on the table evenly. Annoying, but i can live with it. Kinda sucks for a 2k machine huh?

Man all I hear is problems! That's it!!!! I'm going to test my C2D MBP for one hour or so in the shop before I take it home.

I'm starting to regret ordering a MBP...if mine gives me problems I'm not willing to wait a millenia before it comes back from repair...

I finally went ahead and got mine (after my friend got a good one) today and everything is perfect, EXCEPT the aluminum above the latch is bulging out. It's going back tomorrow! ****.

I dont think there are that many people with problems. Nearly all MBPs have the gap issue, so I doubt you will get one that doesnt. Also, mines perfect apart from gap and the eject key is slightly sticking out and bent compared to the rest of the keys, but you really wouldnt notice it.

Personally, I feel the overall build quality is fantastic. Alot better then some of the plasticy windows machines I have seen.

PPrroobblleemmss!! Are you listening Apple? People pay fortunes and get low quality MBPs in return. This is just not fare and will cost you. If you cannot do it hardware-wise, then open your Mac OS up and let others take care of the hardware.

Ive been looking at your other posts and you seem to dislike MBPs, so im not suprised your trying to stir something up here. Just for the record, I have had an acer laptop for just under 2 years now, and its broken 4 times, it wont read disks, and the mother board keeps breaking. Took it into the shop to get it looked at about the CD ROM drive, cost me £60 shipping there and back, and they sent it back saying that it was perfectly fine! Now that is what you call an inferior product (and, that was well over £1k when I brought it, so same price as apple laptops).

Fargo, please notice this is a forum about Apple products. I run a forum about 3G mobile phones and it generally tends to be people who have complaints or trouble who goes on there, and its the same with every forum. A HUGE majority of MBPs are sold off this forum, and the majority of people dont have any problems at all.

Not balanced closing

regarding the uneven closing, mine has this issue. It's not a huge amount difference between the right and left, but the left side, when closed has a small gap. I went to the Shinsaibashi Apple store in Osaka, and checked out all of their 15" mbp c2ds. They ALL had this same issue. So, I dunno. I don't think it's an issue that can get resolved simply by getting another one sent out. Chances don't look good. It seems to me to be a common issue, so try not to worry too much solely based on this uneven closing. Now if you cam fit your finger through one side... then I think there might be a problem!

Finally I have arrived.....
My 15" MBP does not exhibit the problem you guys are describing on this thread. It appears those misaligned lid happens for certain batches of the units. I think I was lucky then if that is the prevalent problem.

Yeah, pretty much all the machines at the apple store I visited had a gap on the left side, but the ones that did had a gap of about a 1~2mm - the first MBP I returned had a gap of about 4mm. I was going to live with the gap if the 2nd MBP I recieved had it, but this one seems to have quite a few issues now that I've been using it for a few hours.

I'm just going to return this one and get a stock 2.33 from the store, and try out those cushions if it has a gap (thanks for the link). I wouldn't normally whine about something this much, but I'm an Architecture student; so details mean a lot to me, and I didn't expect stupid defects like these in what is the most expensive computer I've ever bought.

The only problem with mine is that the keyboard is kinda....mushy. Hard to describe. I'm hoping that typing on it for a few weeks it will go away. Other then that flawless.

same problem here. It's totally not a reason to send it back, unless it gets worse...Other than that, I really like my MBP...It is still hotter than I would have thought after hearing "cooler" reports recently.

If it was "just" slightly uneven when closed that probably wouldnt bother me enough to take it back, I had oter issues with mine...

Well, as I've said before, mine is perfect.. perhaps I can complain about uneven gap between touchpad and case, but is less than 1 mm, or the uneven gap when close, but again isn't something that bothers me that much, or that the protection of DVD-CD bay that after use it is slightly open, or differents hights of keyboards buttons, but... final impresion is that it don't worth it.
Even more, some complain because the MBP is quite expensive, but for the same specs, even a Dell's laptop is as expensive as an apple... and with a much poorer OS, without iLife, not as pretty, and without the service level that apple has... I don't know, eventhough Apple must put more attention in QC, there always will be problems to address, I think that the heat and machine-sound problems have been addressed... other may still be there.

I touch wood that the only problem that I must live with is the extrange (poor)behavior of wi-fi reception, that is my ONLY claim. :(

Returning my 2nd MBP for the exact same reasons+dodgy lcd and squeaking spacebar.

The dreaded squeaking spacebar - this drives me insane when I use the MBP on the move. Dodgy screen - check. 2 x dead PSU's - check. Warped lid - check. Warped case - check. Rattly fan - check. Some of those fixed by the last Applecare visit, rest not addressed. Fortunately using it on the move is something I don't do often and I use it in lid-closed mode so the keyboard, flickering screen and other issues don't bother me in everyday use of the MBP. As soon as I've fully migrated over to the Pro I'm hitting up Applecare with the list of woes on my POS - if anything comes back unresolved I'll just keep sending it back.

My (top of the range) Sony's fit & finish is exact. My HP, almost a hardware clone of the MBP was built better than the Apple. Even the cheapest Latitude I have (a quarter of the MBP's price) has had fewer build-quality problems - and when I had it, they came and fixed it on-site.

I hear you, its such a shame. I love OS X tho...dunno what to do really. I cant keep sending these things back.
