My SuperDrive is making a really disturbing sound when I put a disc in. I mentioned it before, but I've upped a sound clip of it online.

I got a friend who works at a service center and he's getting it replaced for me, but I just wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem.

I thought that was what all slot-loading drives in Apple laptops sounded like

Yeah, that's about the same sound that my brand new C2D 15" makes when I pop a disc in. Figured it was normal.

Have got the very same sound on my Macbook Pro.
I do think this is normal on these machines as I went
to four different shops and tested four different Macbooks
and they were all the same.

One of the good thing about getting multiple replacements of any model computer is that you start getting a feel for what is normal and what is not. That's perfectly normal! The LG drives seem a little more gentle and silent than the matsushita drives, but they all make that clunking sounds. No need for worry!

I've had two MBPs. The first didn't make that sound, but the second does.

Mine also makes the same sound

Thank you for posting the sound. That is exactly the same sound my 15" C2D MBP makes when it takes in and ejects the disks.

I was so un-nerved by this sound and I also posted this thread in the past:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/251302/

It is good to know other people's MBPs are making the same sound like mine.

As the other posters said, I also figured out that is normal for this optical drive.

Same here, actually... this is the second one I've got.

But the thing is the loud snapping noises is the one that disturbs me... the entire case vibrates and what not.

Ok I do think when you spend so much money on a product like a Macbook Pro you want and almost need perfection. You expect it, that's why you bought a Mac. If like me you look, listen and study your machine you will always find a negative. In the case of the superdrive noise I still think it's
normal but that won't stop me popping into my local Apple store tomorrow and having a listen to a couple more.

And yes I do have a life!

dude, thats sounds SO much like mine, that when I hit play, I thought I accidently slipped a CD in my superdrive or something...:p It's nothing to worry about man. Trust me.

Well, I sent it to a friend who owns a mac, and he said "Your Superdrive is f***ed." I'm taking it to the store (and picking up my Crumpler bag while I'm at it) since a friend who works there offered to replace it and I guess I'll see how it goes.

Please do let us know how the new unit sounds. My guess is it would sound like the one you had if that is the same model.

well I did as I said and tested four more machines in the apple store
and another two somewhere else and yes the superdrives all have
the same slot loading sound. So I really don't think it's a problem.

Just put a disc in and yes, my MBP makes the same sound. Surely it's nothing to worry about, just the way the drive sucks the disc in. Enjoy your awesome machine!

I just got my MBP today and I was like this thing sounds terrible. So is this normal or a defect? For such I nice machine I'm very surprised.

It's not a problem most of these machines sound like this. Mine does.

Finally got mine replaced today...

It sounds a whole lot better, still sorta clicky and stuff but doesn't sound like it's murdering my drive.

I'll upload a sound bite later, but to me it sounds like there's a fairly big difference.

Ok, like everyone else said, mine makes the same sound. It seems like you guys are being waaaayy too picky. If the drive works fine and doesn't screw up your discs, then I don't even think you have a valid complaint. Yea, I guess I expect perfection out of my new C2D, but wow...the drive makes noise when you put it in, who cares?
