MBP C2D + ATITool

Just got my MBP C2D. Needless to say, it's blindingly fast and the build quality of this thing is like nothing I have ever seen.

Of course, having come from a MB, the first thing I wanted to try out was games AoE III, Battlefield 2142 etc. all run butter smooth on high settings.

However, in order to switch on the super high end type of eatures, I think I'd prefer the extra fps provided by an ATITool overclock.

Problem is, when I open ATITool, it doesn't recognise the curret speeds on the GPU, and sets them both at 0, and whatever speeds I suggest cause deltas when checking for artifacts... even 1 1.

I figure it's something to do with drivers or perhaps the ATITool version I have. Any ideas?

Which version of ATITool are you using? Is it one of the betas?

Have you tried the omega drivers? Though i wouldn't recommend overclocking unless you have a laptop cooler...they help A LOT under bootcamp.

I'm using the Omega Drivers, however it froze once...it has yet to do that again but i'm keeping an eye on it.

yes that is it.

I dont know if the lockup was caused by heat or the drivers. I wish apple went with Nvidia. Their drivers are much more reliable and they support their legacy cards (their newest drivers work with my GeForce 4 Ti4800) unlike ATi. ATi drivers are crap..its a well known fact.

Lock ups cause either when the temperature rises to high (although this is no way near enough to damage the components - there's a treshhold set by the computer, and it'll auto-freeze no matter what if you top it) or if you raise the clocks too much or too fast, freaiing the GPU.

You can't break anything by software overclocking. If you do it a lot over a very long period of time (years and years) you might reduce the absolute life of your computer by, I dunno, maybe a few months? But as a rule, it's perfectly safe.

Of course, laptops being laptops, you have to be extra careful keeping the fans free and making sure heat diffuses from the bottom of the case.


I'd oerclock the living daylights out of my old iMac with ATITool, squeezing about 20 extra fps of Half Life 2 out of it ^^


Anyway, I'll try the omergas and I'll try another, final build, of ATITool. Cheers peeps.

Use AtiTool 0.25 beta 14. I suggest you don't go over 430/430, though the gpu is rated around 460/460. Your right fan could potentially become permanently damaged.

when i locked up i did not have a laptop cooler. Now that i do, it hasnt since. Also the fans do not kick into high rpm with a laptop cooler. It helps a ton.

Man, I installed omegas and got .25 ATITool, but still no dice. It deltas at anything above 10 10.

a laptop cooler is a base with one or two fans built into it. the air from the fans cools the bottom of the laptop, so the fans don't run as hard.
