I wanted to know if anyone else have noticed (or whether I have a defective unit). The C2D Macbook Pro fans quick on and get pretty loud for let's say 15 minutes)...Has anyone else experienced this? Is this normal?

PS: I am not running any games, not even listening to music....all I have opened are Safari and Quicktime...

Do you guys think that I have a defective unit?

Unfortunately, yes. Mine is absolutely silent while using Safari, iTunes and Quicktime together - the fans don't even come on, and my temp is 43C. If I rip a DVD with Handbrake, or MacTheRipper the fans come on, but not loudly. I've only had it since yesterday, so I'm just getting things loaded onto it yet.

Mine gets loud when I play games -- it sounds like a plane starting up actually. You can hear it increase in volume and frequency. It's fairly annoying but not that bad if you've got headphones on.

It's almost completely inaudible when I'm not running anything that really taxes the system.

I had the same problem as you! (see : https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/248575/) I went in to the Apple Store to see a "genius" and was told that it was completely abnormal and definitely defective. They setup a replacement RMA for me so I should I have a new system soon!

To confirm we are having the same problem... I boot up, everything is fine, only Finder is running. Within 5 or 6 minutes, the fan is up at 6000rpm regardless of CPU load, which apps are running or anything.

Agreed...mine is like that too (15/2.16). It sounds like a teeny airplane is starting up when I play WoW. Kinda goes whing-whing-whingwhingwhing! when the graphics card is stressed. Very quiet otherwise though.

Yeah, I'm in the exact same boat. My fan goes on while playing WoW, but since I play with the headphones on it doesn't bother me. Otherwise it's super quiet.

My fans start revving up in OSX if I have a lot of applications active and if I'm downloading and watching a movie at the same time. Of course I have it sitting on my lap so it can get a bit toasty at times. I just instaled DuoTemp so I'll report back with how hot it gets in a few mins.

Hmm, I have the 2.33 and it is extremely quiet. It's also very very cool, the metal is just barely warm and I've been working pretty intensely on this thing for the last two hours or so.

I'm really picky so I would have been annoyed by a loud fan, unless I'm deaf.

Here's an update to my story ( I am really pissed)...

I called the local Apple store (which is 40 mins drive and an extra 30 mins in extremely bad traffic) anyways I explained to the person who picked up the phone that I had purchased my laptop from Apple.com and that I needed to exchange the computer. The moron who picked up the phone said no problem, just come to the store, go to the Genius Bar and they will test the computer, if it turns out to be defective we will exchange if for you.

Anyways I drove for almost an hour and a half just to get to the Apple store, I get there and the Genius Mother****,tells me to wait until he tests the machine.

After 50 minutes he comes back and says, there is a possibility that you computer might be defective but we cannot exchange it here at the store because you purchased from Apple.com...

WHAT!?!?! Man I flipped, I was already in a bad mood because I drove for 40 mins, was stuck in traffic for an extra 30 mins, they made me wait for an extra 50 minutes to test the computer, to tell me that they cannot exchange it?

I will never purchase a product directly from Apple again, I will wait until Amazon receives it or Compusa, but what they did to me today was not right, the lack of care to their customers, specially those geeks at the Genius Bar, was the last drop...

Now they want me to send this computer back and reship it to me within 7-14 business days, how is that right?
I will return this computer and buy it from Compusa or Bestbuy...

yeah that sucks about the apple store. I hate it when they dont really train the sales reps well, or to the same rules. I called one store and they said they had all their C2D macbook pros "Held"...i called another and asked if i could hold one and they said no because it was a new product. i was like WTF?! you should ask to speak to the manager about the employee that said it was ok to come.

edit: I only really notice my fans under bootcamp, running HL2 or CS:S. If i boot into OSX, i use smcfancontrol (i know...i feel kinda bad using it cause htis thing is supposed to be cooler) and turn the min. fan speed to 2500. I hear no difference in sound, but my temps usually stay under 50 and around 45-6

If you have purchased a stock model from apple.com without any customization it is possible to exchange it at an apple store. I can confirm this as I have done it personally. The Store you went to had completely uninformed and uneducated employees who either failed to inform you that they could not exchange because you had a custom machine, or if your machine was a stock model then they are the biggest morons on earth.

You should call that apple store and maybe educate "their" policies to "themselves."

In any case it is 100% possible to swap out a stock model of any apple machine at a retail store if you bought it at apple.com

I know I should, they think they are all that and I still can't understand why LOL...Anyways I spent 1 hour with Apple on the phone today because they did not want me to return the computer for a credit, of course, because of the glossy screen. I had to speak to 5 different people, run 1000 tests to return this thing. I swear, this is the first and last time I am purchasing from 1-800myapple. I was never told that, by getting a glossy screen I would have to go through all this trouble.

Anyways, they are sending me a preprinted label so I can return this back to them. I will purchase a glossy screen from Macmall and get a $150 money back and no taxes...Much better, less money and their return policy is not as strict (if I ever run into another overheating issue)..

I'm surprised that you can't return a CTO to an Apple store for return or replacment - are you sure you can't? Sometimes the salesperson doesn't know better, and it might take a request to speak with the store manager, but since they're corporate stores, not privately run, the return/swap should be possible even if ordered online. As always, being firm, yet respectful and civil gets you the best results - YMMV.

I can't. Like I mentioned before I was really pissed off at the store, I spoke to the Manager from the store and also a Manager from the 1800#.
They cannot and could not do anything for me, I even threatened with a charge back...they still wouldn't do anything.
I have never seen this before. I don't understand why they offer a 14 day return policy, when you have to literally fight for an exchange or much less money back.

I don't understand why they consider the Glossy Screen CTO if they also sell the Glossy Screens at the store.
I understand that, if you upgraded the Hard Drive or Graphics Card, they should be a little more strict on returns, but the Glossy Screen does not make sense.

Also even if they could repair my laptop, I would not want my brand new laptop opened up in pieces. From previous posts I have read, it seems that once your computer goes to the Genius Bar for repair, it is never the same, something always breaks.

Boy, I hate to negate your experience, but when I went into the Apple Store on the last day of my 14-day return window to exchange a Macbook for a new MBP C2D, they didn't even charge me a restocking fee. :D
