I've noticed similar reports on Apple's support forums and macintouch.com as well, but there haven't been any solutions to this issue so I am asking here. The problem is that the MacBook Pro internal LCD blacks out randomly when an external monitor is connected. I have never had this issue on the 12" PowerBook that this MBP is replacing.
There is no specific timing as to when the LCD blacks out, and I can be typing something or doing some other non-idle process is going on when it will unexpectedly black out. When I say the LCD "blacks out", the display literally stays illuminated with an all black background, the LCD itself is not shutting off.
The machine will lock up if you are in dual display mode and move the cursor onto the internal MBP LCD requiring a hard power-off. If I don't touch the mouse after the LCD blacks out, I can close the lid of the MBP and force a sleep. Once awoken from sleep, both displays return back to normal. Reports seem to be mixed with the MBP screen going crazy/displaying artifacts and then eventually blacking out. They mention heat potentially causing the issue, but during my tests I am doing nothing except intensive other than browsing websites or just using iTunes. I am just curious if anyone has had this issue and solution for it.
