MBP C2D overheating?

Hi guys,

long time lurker, first time poster. I wanted to get some feedback on my new MBP (2.16) C2D...

I'm not sure if I am having overheating problems with this laptop. I thought all the issues were fixed after the CD models. In any case, I'm noticing that my new MBP is getting hot and that the fans are coming on a lot.

For example, I was just running Azureus in the background and was editing on iPhoto (as well as having Firefox open). This shouldn't be too huge of a load on the computer, but I noticed that it was becoming very hot in the top left portion (right by the speaker) as well as hearing the fans go on big time. I did a status check and the fans were around 5000rpm, while the CPU temp was ~55C. It seemed hotter than that... especially the top right corner.

Does anyone know exactly what's going on? Should I get this checked out? Get more RAM so there are more resources?

Check the activity monitor and see how much work the cpu is doing, you might have a ruanway process that is causing it.

How much RAM you have in there now?

I had open FireFox (4 tabs), iPhoto (not editing) and Azureus (1 torrent) and it used 200MB Ram.

With Azureus the more torrents you're downloading, the more ram it eats (in my experience) I guess that theory can be applied to the other 2 programs as well.

Install MenuMeters and monitor the CPU loads.


also depends what kind of editing you were doing. I'm not entirely sure about iPhoto, but at least with playing with filters in photoshop causes the fans to speed up (due to CPU usage, and eventually heat).

Well, I currently only have one gig of ram. I'm definitely thinking of adding another one in there.

however, would that really solve the heating issue? I just find it odd that the CPU is at 55C and the top left part of the laptop is really hot. What's up there anyways (I'm a relatively new switcher.. if you didn't notice).

From looking at the stats, here is the memory breakdown:
Wired: 149mb
Active: 393mb
Inactive: 468mb
Free: 13mb

It kinda worries me that there are only 13megs free...

That's normal. My MBP right now is just sitting there with entourage, Safari and MSN open and its 49C. I've gotten it up to 75C when editing 400+ MB files in photoshop and the fans come on at that time. As long as it's not up more than that, I wouldn't worry about it. Remember, the case is metal, it transfers heat pretty good.
