For the last few weeks my MBP has been awefully slow.. takes ages to start up, if i leave it running for more than a day it becomes absolutely useless until its restated.. every app takes a few minutes to load...

i repaired all disk permissions.. i just ran "verify disk" and go tthe following:

Volute Header needs minor repair
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.

0_0.. the "repair disk" button is greyed out though.. :(

it's greyed out because it can't modify that while you're booted from it. If you reboot selecting your Mac OS X install disk as the startup disk, you should be able to use the Disk Utility on the install disk to repair the disk.

Almost definitely, mate, but we won't know 'til you've fixed it. Keep running fsck until it makes no changes, too. Oh, and you're not missing much here. It's bloody freezing!

I'd also make sure you've got backups of everything that's important to you. The error sounds minor and, hopefully, once it's fixed everything will be back to normal - but these things can often be indicators of the health of the drive and could be your first warning of a complete failure.
