Ok, so I did do a search on the forums to see if this question or something similar was posted before and was not able to find an answer. I have a MBP (Rev A) Core Duo 1.83 GHz, and it shipped with the stock 512MB of RAM at the time. I purchased form Crucial a 1 Gig stick which i added to my machine (total 1.5 GB RAM) and its been workin wonderfully for a little over a year now.

It will be a while before I sell this and buy a new MBP, simply coz I am waiting for when BlueRay Drives will be included, as well as Solid State Hard Drives; that for me will justify the new purchase. At the moment I use my MBP for surfing the net, iTunes, Movies, etc....pretty standard, fairly light weight stuff...with the exception of some CS3 apps every now and then.

With the current range of MBPs and Leopard just around the corner, I am wondering if should ditch the 512 MB stick of RAM for an additional 1 Gig, bringing my total up to 2 GB? what sort of performance gain is there to be had from moving 1.5 to 2 GB? Has anyone out there done so? The only reason I am considering this is because I notice i tend to get the beachball a few times espeically when working with large apps and trying to do several things at once, and notice its not as smooth or as fast as I would like it to be.

I appreciate any input or advice you can give me. Considering what I use my MBP for, just want to know if there will be any noticable speed increase with the additional 512 MB.

Thanks.

I reckon check if you need it before you spend the money.

Go to Activity Monitor (Applications -> Utilities), click System Memory, and check how many page outs you are getting. If it's between 0 and 1000, you don't need more RAM. If it's above this, you might want to consider getting more RAM :)
