MBP Checked and cool

Just got back from my local Fry's Electronics and they had 2 MBP 15's up and running. I ran my finger across the strip above the "F" keys were most have posted that it is super hot to the touch and it was cool as a cucumber.

I am pretty sure that this is an isolated event. But felt that is was worth mentioning.

I have a PB 17" 1ghz and now I am upgrading to a MBP 15 2Ghz and that is due to arrive tomorrow and will be very interested to see if it is a cool one.

It really is a crap shoot to by one of these machines right now. I have my fingers crossed.

I hate to break it to you, but there is a 95% chance that after an hours use, the bar above your Function keys will burn to the touch. About an 80% chance that the underneath will get VERY warm.

The 15" MBP is a disaster... I am so glad I sent mine back for the 17"

it's not true, mine goes just warm even after hours of used. Some 15" MBP have the heat issues, not all

The only time mine gets hot above the F keys is when I run heavy CPU loads for long periods of time...and even then, it's not hot enough to burn you. Same with the bottom.

Stating that I'm from the PC world, and rendering the macbook useless with the issues it has.

No I am selling my PB 17 and buying a new MBP. I hope I am one of the lucky ones, but if I am not so be it. I can raise hell with the best of them. There is that 14 day return policy with the online store. Whatever happens, happens.

I agree. I ordered my 15 inch MBP three days ago, and it's on its way here. Too many people are complaining that the 15 inch is a disaster, but seriously, if someone buys a new computer, and it works great, are they going to post a ton of threads that says: Macbook Pro worked normally as expected? Of course not, that's why you hear so much on here about the faulty hot as crap ones. It's because when things go wrong, you will hear about it. When things go great, you don't. It's just like the Bush Administration.....

I don't see why Apple can't fix this problem...if it is as simple as adding less thermal paste, like the articles say, Apple should be able to do this after the first week. Why haven't they?

Yesterday afternoon I received my MPB 15 2.0 from the Online Store. But I have to say that over the last few days before receiving this machine I have been having second, third and forth thoughts about whether or not I made the correct choice with all the talk about "heat", "whine/Moo" et al.

But I can say with the smallest amount of optimisum that things appear to be running pretty well.

Now this machine was built in Week 13 (3/30/06) according to the sticker on the top of the shipping box. From my experience this indicates when the unit was placed in the shipping container.

I had a PB 17 1ghz that had a small amount of HD noise and the fans would kick on and make a racket. The new MBP is being quiet right now and am hoping that I am in the minority that got a good machine.

I did a clean install of OSX and removed the trail spftware, extra stuff you don't need and then I attached a firewire to transfer over the data from my PB17.

I thought for sure that the clean install or the FW transfer would have kicked the fans on but it did not. My 17 however was making all kinds of noise trying to keep up.

I ran my finger along the top bar to feel for heat and there was a little more then normal but not burning my finger. The bottom was warm and might be uncomfortable to have in your lap but I use this on a podium pad and it is fine.

I did run into some funky issues with the Airport. It keeps nukeing my Netgear wireless router. But when I hook up my Airport Express everything is great.

To sum up.Things are going well in the first 12 hours. I will be keeping one eye and ear on this baby to make sure it stays cool and quiet.

Runs hot and cold

I've had my MBP 15" 2.0 for nearly a month now and I have experienced the heat and whine issues (week 10 machine). Since I used my laptop all day I have it set to never turn off. In Energy Saver setting this puts the machine into highest performance mode when running off the mains. It gets really hot although the processor itself only reports a temperature of 56C which is reasonable. If I work the machine hard it goes up into the high 80s and the fans kick in dropping it back down to the mid 70s consistently until the work is done at which point it drops back down to under 60. This doesn't seem unreasonable as my old 933 iBook G4 idles at about 45C and under heavy load it has hit 78C before the fan kicked in and dropped it back down to 60ish.

But......

This morning I ran the machine purely off the battery and it ran for a good 3.5 hours and the temperature was much lower. Obviously the machine was in energy saving mode so it must be throttling the cpu back etc. Under these conditions it really was comfortable to have on my lap and the bar above the function keys was only slightly warm as opposed to scorching as it is on the mains in better performance mode.

If you want to use the MBP on your lap you should switch it to better energy savings, it will then be perfectly comfortable. When I use my machine during the day on mains I want full performance so I guess I will just have to live with it being hot but at least it is sitting on a desk and not on my lap.

The whine does bug me a bit though.....

This sounds exactly like mine (I use mine the same way you do...although my temps throughout the day sit between 45-50...but I may not push mine as hard), and I find it completely reasonable as well. I had an iBook G3 800, and the temps I get from the MBP aren't much higher.
