So I just got home with my brand new USB-C-Displayport adapter so I could use these two together and everything was working fine until I messed around with the refresh rate in the settings. I saw the 144hz option and immediately went for it, which resulted in both screens going black and the MBP completely freezing up (even after external display was disconnected). Had to hold power button to force a restart.

Tried several times re-connecting the XB270HU but every time ends up with both screens immediately going black and the MBP freezing up and requiring a restart.

Any hints for how to proceed so I can get some life into the display?

Obviously 144hz is beyond (too high) what the Acer can do, hence, the blackout. Check with Acer customer service to see if there is anyway to reset the monitor. Usually when you choose a refresh rate which is too high for a given monitor and it blacks out, pulling the AC plug and letting it rest for awhile and then restarting it, gets it back to its normal refresh rate.

There is a chance that you might have damaged the Acer with the very high refresh rate. Hopefully, that did not happen.

lol what

It is a 144hz monitor, how would that make any sense whatsoever.

OK, understand. You didn't mention that the Acer was able to do 144 Hz. However, then why did it black out and now you can't restart it?
