Does anyone know whether it is possible to dual-boot a MacBook Pro with Ubuntu Linux (or just Linux in general)? If possible, how would I do this and would you advise against it for any reason? Please share your opinion.

Woah! That is far too complicated. Can't I just do install Ubuntu on an external and hold down c everytime I boot or something like that?

You will need to use a bootmanager only way to do it. Its fairly easy process if you have used linux befor. As detailed on the ubuntu forums here

Other wise use a VM
