MBP fan? making weird noises *update*

At least I think it's the hard drive. The problem is intermittent and varies in severity. Here is a recording (recorded with Audacity) using the built in mic while the laptop is in clamshell mode.

Is my hard drive dieing? Will Apple replace my hard drive for free if I bought the MBP refurbished back around October 06?
 
All your links take me too are adds for the posting service. Ok finally got it. I think your drive is dying. Get smart reporter and back up regularly.

Your under warrenty. Get that baby to the genius bar. Back up your data before you take it.
 
That is a really weird sound that I've never heard.

My FIRST thought is that it's a fan, and the blades are rubbing against the side of the housing, or the fan isn't mounted well and is vibrating.

Check the SMART status of the drive.

And put the shut off, and ccooled down laptop in the freezer for a little while (15 minutes?) and then pull it out. Does it take a while before the sound appears? Is it only happening when it's heated up?
 
I had to replace my HD on my Powerbook. At first I thought it was the fan but my laptop was too cool for the fan. Replaced the drive and the sound was gone. I think its a bearing in the drive.

Search for "lightsaber" in the forums. A lot of Toshiba drives have failed in Powerbooks.
 
Thanks for the replies everyone. :) I called Apple about an hour ago and they set up an appointment for me at the genious bar tonight, so we'll see what's going on with my MBP.

As for backing my data up, is there any specific program I should use, or can I just drag and drop through finder when I insert a blank dvd? All I need to back up is my music and photos.
 
Well I have a new hard drive on order for my MBP. The genious said it sounds like a midget playing a didgeridoo is stuck inside my laptop. :lol:
 
Glad you didn't loose any data. A coworker lost all his video footage of his son when his 6 month old iMac died. He wasn't worried about backups because the machine was new :(
 
Well I picked my laptop up last night and she's as good as new! :D They even managed to copy over all my data too, so I didn't need to use the backups I made (but now I have them just in case :D). My MBP seems to run much quieter now, and also doesn't seem to be as hot either. Is there any way to find out what drive they put in without taking my MBP apart?
 
And congrats on the quick fix as well as having them copy over all your data.

Go to the Apple in menu bar. Apple> About this Mac> More info...

i've got the same problem. it doesnt sound quite so severe but it does appear to be the left fan and i'm worried :(
..and warranty just ran out about 2 weeks ago ... gah :-/
