I am considering upgrading from my PB to the SR MBP but am concerned about the recent reports of yellow tint on the new LED display.

I will be using it with an external display often, but there will also be many times that I am on the road and need to be able to rely on the colour on the built-in display itself.

My question to those who use their computer for colour critical work and have the new SR MBP - how bad is it?
 
This is for professional work - so matte is the preferable option. Do we know yet if the problem exists on matte, glossy or both?
 
I've calibrated mine using a Monaco Optix. Doesn't help.

Calibration can calibrate your entire display, it can't calibrate the top half of the screen one way and the bottom half another way.
 
landis: do you know what type of calibration fixed the problem?
 
I do not think all screens are affected, I used Monacco Optix and there is still no tinge on my screen. I actually looked very hard trying to find it too!

If you have a screen that is affected you should return it.
 
All I can say is make sure you don't get the glossy screen ;).

It is completely stupid statements like that which continue to perpetuate the myth that glossy screens are bad. This issue has NOTHING to do with glossy screens, it affects both glossy and matte and has something to do with the backlighting.

And in case you're interested I've used both glossy and matte, both are great. I do professional audio engineering work and I find either one to be just fine, with a slight edge going to glossy due to a better contrast between colours.

If not, and I pay, will I be given a hassle for wanting to return/exchange it?

If you express your feelings to a sales rep at an Apple Store, they *might* make a deal with you that if when you get the laptop, you pull it out at the store, and have a look at it, they will send it back and get it replaced if there are any dead pixels, or if there are obvious yellow areas. Don't count on it, because they are not obligated to do this, but if you are nice enough, and recognise that they have every right to tell you to shove it, you might get to make a deal such as this.

Seriously, I looked really closely at mine after reading threads like these and apart from noticing a wee bit of backlight unevenness near the edges (damned you guys! for making me notice!) I just do not see any other major issues.
 
I honestly don't notice any major issues with the screen. I'm on my 2nd SR MBP (i exchanged the last one because I was paranoid about the lid not closing flush).

Other than the fact that it won't close completely flush, both MBPs have not had a yellow tint issue at all. Neither also flickerred as some users reported.

Something one of the Apple employees showed me was holding CTRL+ALT+APPLE BUTTON + either comma or period will adjust the contrast. This little tidbit actually helped finalize my decision on picking Matte over Glossy. I thought the colors looked more dull on the Matte, but as soon as I changed the contrast, it looked MUCH better than the glossy.

Especially since you could change your viewing angle without having to adjust the computer..
 
I don't believe Apple has a right to tell me to 'shove it' if the unit is defective. But it's a good idea to talk to the sales rep and inform them of my concerns.

The way I look at it .. a colour cast on a display (especially just a part of it) would make for a defective unit and no-one could blame a customer for not wanting to pay for it.

I think I'll make the trip to the store instead of ordering online and only pay once I'm convinced there is nothing wrong with the unit.

First part seems to be in software since increasing it all the way turned the grey colors here into white...

What you mean with adjusting the viewing angle?
 
It is a software function (possibly tied to the GPU, not really sure in the technicalities..)

But the viewing angle I mean by that with a glossy screen, you have to look almost directly at the screen to avoid having glare. With matte, glare is almost non-existent at any angle.
 
Hm, guess I'll be holding off on the new MBP's. I just got mine 4 months ago anyways, and I'd rather wait for Leopard to come out first.
