MBP Hard Disk Drive Dilemma

Hi,

The 15.4-inch 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo comes with a 100GB 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard drive.

This just isn't going to be enough as I want to run OSX and XP. The drive also seems a bit 'slow' for video and intense work.

I could upgrade to a Seagate Momentus 7200.1 100GB for a faster internal hard drive but probably will be filled up quickly.

I then looked at external hard drives and just keeping the stock one for the internal.

I like the Maxtor One Touch III 500GB Combo U2FW and LaCie 500GB Big Disk Extreme FW400/800 USB2 7200rpm 16MB.

By getting an external hard drive will I have any issues? Can I run the OS of the external? Will I be able to run applications well? Will there be speed/writing/saving issues?

What have others done to overcome speed and storage issues? What option should I take?

Personally, I'd not be using a laptop for "video and intense work". It's a laptop after all. If you don't think the 5400RPM hard drive will work for you, just update it to the fastest you can through Apple. Or.. take a chance and get the fastest & largest 3rd party OEM hard drive you can and change it out yourself.

IMO, I wouldn't shakle myself to trying to run OS X off a firewire drive as my primary OS. I'd use an external as storage, but not as my boot device. There are plenty of users on here who use firewire drives to store/edit their video data. Just make sure you get firewire over USB2.0. FW is much faster.

get a few internal sata 3.5" disks, and get a raid case from newegg, connect through firewire, you'll be ok.
