What hard drives does apple use in their MBPs? Are there any benchmarks? How does their 7200rpm compare to a Seagate Momentus 7200.2? Should I just ask for the apple 7200 hd when ordering? Or replace it after I get it?

I haven't purchased a MBP yet. It is cheaper to buy the drive separate from a 3rd party and replace it yourself. But if Apple uses a high performing 7200rpm HD then it may not be worth the hassle. If I can find out exactly what HD they use, I can compare the benchmarks and decide.

The past three Macs that I've owned have all had Hitachi drives in them. I don't know if they use more than one brand.

If you care about speed, you might be better off with an external FW when at home and have regular speed (5400rpm) drive internally - you'll benefit from increased battery life.

I'm building an external SATA drive(s) and connecting via expresscard for max speed. I'm leaning towards putting a new drive in myself.
