Is there any way to stop the DVD drive spinning up on the MBP (running Leopard), each time the computer starts up, wakes from sleep & when VMware Fusion starts?

It's really annoying and I barely ever use the DVD drive.

I believe he means the sound when it is just checking if there is a disc in the dirve. Its sounds like a hip hop scratch to me. It would be nice if someone did come up with a terminal command as it is annoying and I am sure with how much I wake/sleep my computer it would be nice if it didnt wear itself out.

As mentioned above, there is no disc - it's just noisy when it tries to check whether there's a disk or not. Every time I wake up the damn computer!

Try the Powerbook G4. That was quiet. MBP = not quiet :(

totally agree

my sis used to have G4 and man, the disk drive was so quite

unlike the MBP's

and all MBP's are like that ( unless maybe they have a different manufactured Disk Drive ( mine is Fujitsu btw )

and each time i woke my MBP from sleep or turning my MBP on

1st i thought it's a defect, but later to found out it is like that

but well i guess we have to live with it

AFAIK this is the same on all new SR macbooks, they changed the DVD drive.
It was that quiet on my previous 2ghz macbook I couldn't hear it but now on my 2.2 SR macbook I can.

I was going to say I don't really care for it as I only have to reboot the macbook after VLC has crashed it when I play HD films but I just realised it does it when waking from sleep.
Its not that much an issue for me, when I changed macbooks I thought it was very loud but now its either quietened down or I have got used to it :)

How often are you waking it from sleep? I mean, if it's enough to annoy you, then maybe you are putting it to sleep too much?
