Hello everyone. I am wondering about your experiences in buying the MBP in Apple Stores (specifically the Michigan Ave. store in Chicago). In general, how has availability been this past week or so? I figure I'll call before I go, because it's a two hour drive for me, but I would hope that if I went in this Saturday, I could get my machine.

My more important questions is this: Will the staff allow me to open and unpackt he machine there in the store, and check it out before purchase, or at least let me check it out there after i purchase it? I am worried about the screen buzz/whine, and other potential damage/DOA conditions, and i would hate to drive two hours home to discover the horror of the squealing display!

No, you have to buy it before you open it. If you open it and it is defective, you'll be right there in the store so you can exchange it, but it's unlikely it would be defective. And also, they probably won't let you go through that process 4 or 5 times until you find a "perfect" machine.

Well, If you buy as stock MBP, then you can return it within a 10, or was it 14, days for another one I believe. dont quote me, im sure someone else know the protocol better than I.

you can't open it until you buy it. Once you do, they'll obviously take it back if it's defective, but you may want to clarify with them ahead of time what qualifies as "defective."

sorry know you didnt wanted to be quoted.

If you open it their is a 10% charge on open box items off Full price not discounted one if you get one. If you plan to return an open box item try to get a replace one first and then return that to void this charge. That is what i did.

Hey man,
just wanted to tell you that altho the michigan av store is really nice.. if your looking to do that kind of stuff, its probally not your best bet.. they are really busy, and everything is a bit dirty the one time i went..

i had much better experiances at the woodfield mall (in schamburg (sp?)) one or the Northbrook Court apple store.. they are a bit less busy so the people spend more time with you..just my experiance.
