MBP Issues

I just got the computer a few days ago and I'm in love with it... however, there are two things I've noticed and my Apple store closed a half hour before I thought to call...

1) I do not hear the fan running, and the computer is overheating. It has done so three times. It's also 80 degrees already, so the intense heat emanating from the mac doesn't help, plus I'm worried for its survival. Running it on oven mitts is an effective but kind of silly-looking solution... Is there a System Application I can run to correct this?

I took a break to empty the dishwasher and forgot what the second thing was. I'll let you know if I remember...

You should download and install the iStat Pro widget, here:

It will tell you your CPU temperature and the speed of the fans. CPU temps between 50 and 60 degrees C are normal usage conditions. If you run processor hungry applications you may see the temp go up to close to 80C. The normal fan speed is around 2000 rpm, when temp increases fan speed may increase to close to 4500 rpm.

Wow, apparently they ARE going at 2000 RPM. I can't hear them at all! I guess using Windows desktops all my life has skewed my expectations...

But the problem remains that this little f**ker churns out heat like a furnace. If that's normal, I can live with it, I guess, but I'd like it not to overheat. Well, I've had it off for a while. I'll check the temperature again later.

Also, I remembered the second thing. Apple updated its displays to LED, but I think mine is an LCD. Yes, indeed, "About This Mac" confirms it. I was looking forward to an LED display - did I miss something?

All screens are LCD, but some have an LED backlight; the previous LCDs had cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) backlighting. If your MPB is a 15.4'' of the new generation (2.2 or 2.4ghz) it has an LED display.
