I just got a LaCie 500 gig drive, the long one with two disks hooked up as a single raid volume. I transferred my 160 gig MBP c2d drive data to it and booted up -- it seemed much faster, and xBench said it was twice as fast. After using it for a while (with a 20" monitor and external keyboard + mouse), I can say that it seems like a whole new computer, much faster and more responsive. I had never realized what a price one pays for using the built-in 2.5" disk. Of course, using an external disk means that your information isn't portable unless you transfer it, so most people won't find this a very satisfactory solution.
