They sort of skipped the first step: admitting they have a problem, but Apple is at least starting to patch stuff up with their customers who have been complaining about whining MacBook Pros since the release of the product. MacBook Pro user Rickard Almqvist sent in his MBP for some repairs and got it back with a new logic board and a friendly letter from Apple letting him know what was up. The new version of the logic board requires OS X 10.4.6, as opposed to the machine's original 10.4.5, so they included some new install DVDs in case he needs to reinstall. After the upgrade he hasn't had any whining problems, and he, along with other users with similar reports, is attributing it to the new board. No word yet if Apple will offer this upgrade to users who merely complain of the whine, or if you'll need a more serious problem to crop up before they'll do the swap-a-roo, but it does look like there's hope on the horizon beyond just buying a new revision of the troublesome laptop.

It is good to see Apple taking some actions about this whine.

I would like this problem to be solved by the time Merom chips ship with MBPs.

It's good to know that something is being done to fix some of these problems. I know it's restoring my consumer confidence, which will influence my next purchase with Apple

This sounds good!

Luckily I have to go in to get my logic board and display fixed anyway... (due to different reasons, not whining).

I'm sending in mine to get the keyboard & logic board replaced...but it is a 1.83 GHz so I wonder if these 'new' logic boards are made in the 1.83 GHz deal thingy too.

I hope this new logic board has reached Denmark . . .

My MacBook Pro is quite the whiner but I survive. Could sure live without it though :)

After sending my MBP in for the second time a couple of weeks back, I got the new logic board. My MBP has just a slight whine now (almost non-existent), which is a far cry from where it was originally. The heat is also better, although not by much, but I've never been bothered by the heat so that's just a bonus.
