The metal right in front of my trackpad on the ledge that leads down to the keyboard is peeling off. What is going on? This is outrageous.

Any ideas or advice would be appreciated.

Do you mean just in front of the space bar or Command key? If so, that's fairly common I'm afraid. I think it may be due to either the user's finger or finger nail repeatedly rubbing that part of the body as it hits the space bar/Cmd key.

I wish it were that.

Oh, right. I see. That's common? It's so sad. I almost want to peel off the rest so it's uniform.

I've had mine for a year, and there's some slight scratching in that area but no peeling (thankfully!); however I've seen a couple of threads with almost identical photos to yours, so evidently it's not rare.

I'm only guessing about it being caused by a fingernail, but that would seem to be the most likely conclusion.

All right, well thank you. It actually doesn't look as bad as a few minutes ago because the aluminum has lost some of its sheen to the oxygen.

Oh well.

I feel your pain! My laptop bag has an internal zipper which scrapes against the MBP's outer case every time I put it in - luckily the damage wasn't too obvious. Maybe I'm too fussy about my things, but scratches like this really annoy me too!

If you've bought the Mac very recently, you could try taking it back and saying the paint flakes too easily, might be worth a shot.
