I've had this MBP 15' for 4 years. I installed a 1TB ADATA SX8200NP SSD as soon as I purchased the computer so I have been running with that drive for 4 years without a problem.

For the past 2 weeks though, I have been experiencing these panics where the MAC will shutdown unexpectedly. It would then reboot and I would receive this error:

Code:
panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff7f9d75e231): nvme: "Fatal error occurred. CSTS=0xffffffff US[1]=0x0 US[0]=0x95 VID=0xffff DID=0xffff

This also had the consequence of corrupting my outlook database in one instance.

I have run first aid on all volumes multiple times thinking it could be a corruption. That didn't solve the problem. I've also removed the drive and cleaned the connectors thinking it could be a problem with the SSD not being seated properly. Didn't solve the issue. I have also run multiple hardware tests and they all return the ADP000 code, which means there is no issue.

I have read around this could be two things, either a BootRom out of date issue, which I suspect is not the case since this just started happening for the past 2 weeks and I have been using MAC OS Catalina for a good ~6 months. I run SilentKnight just in case but not sure how to interpret the results. BootRom seems out of date but I guess that's expected since I am not on the latest OS?

or

the SSD drive is going bad.

How to ascertain it's the SSD rather than a software/OS/firmware issue?

Thank you.

MBP MID 15' MAC OS Catalina 10.15.7
Boot ROM Version: 430.140.3.0.0

"How to ascertain it's the SSD rather than a software/OS/firmware issue?"

Put the original, factory-installed SSD back in.

I can't just do that and wait that it might happen in a day or 2. This is my working computer and I need it every day.

I reinstalled Catalina just in case. That didn't seem to have any effect. As soon as the re-install finished and I logged back in my account the computer crashed again.
During the weekend I'll try to swap the drive and push the computer see if anything happens.

VirtualBox is being reported early in the panic log, did you try uninstall that (and cleaning up the kexts) and seeing if that app is a contributing factor in your instability?

If you can't get a solution it may well just be time to upgrade that seven year old Mac. Being a computer it seems you critically rely on, ideally you should be looking to replace it every five years. Yes, that's an age I pulled straight out of thin air, but it's one that I personally would adhere to if I relied on a computer for any kind of critical productivity. Some people would advise you change it even more regularly (three years).

No but I find it awkward that that would be the reason. I mean I've had the drive for 4 years and I haven't used virtual box in a long long time. Not even opened it. This kernel panic have only started happening for the past 2 weeks. It's now every day. BTW any pointers on how to clean up the kexts?

The model might be 7 years old but the computer is only 4 years old. I think it still got some juice before changing it. I purposefully bought an older model as I was not a fan of all these new Mac with no port, crappy butterfly keyboard and so on.

You need to take a look at recent Macbook Pros. The days of faulty displays, crappy keyboards and no ports have been gone for over two years. Besides which, any modern M1 or M2 Mac is so exponentially more powerful than your current Mac that it will probably transform your productivity. My only warning would be if you are using any third-party software yet to be made Apple-silicon compliant.

That said, I hope you can get your 2015 working.

Ok, that's a fact that was not communicated in your post, just offering some advise.

I actually just updated VirtualBox just in case and unloaded/deleted 3 prehistoric extensions that have no business running in my MAC. Old software deleted long time ago.

First thing to do is to rule out a software issue, with one of the most common being kernel extensions (kexts). To do this, boot your Mac into safe mode: https://support.apple.com/en-au/guide/mac-help/mh21245/mac . This will boot a minimal system and you should then just keep it up and running for a while and see if it crashes again.

But based on your particular kernel panic, I'd bet that your issue is that your SSD drive is dying/dead.
