MBP: Need to make sure everything's perfect

Hi,

This is my first post here - although I've been visiting this site for quite some time now. Let me first thank all of you - who implicitly helped me in configuring and buying my new MBP. [ I desperately needed a new computer - mine is 733 MHz Pentium 3] .

Yes this is my first ever Mac - although I don't exactly have it yet. It has already been purchased and right now my cousin has it. I'll be getting it within 10 days.

Although I haven't heard any problems regarding MBPs - nevertheless I wanted to make sure everything is working perfectly. Because once I get it - it would be really hard for me to send it back if there's any problem. Trouble is my cousin is not much of a computer guy and I'm new to Macs.


So it would be great if you guys could help me with the checking. (Memory, Temperature etc. - if possible.)




[ For example: In windows - to run Disk defragmentation : Start --> All programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> Disk Defragmenter I don't need to defragment it though - just an example of the sort of help I'm looking for. I'm thinking about writing a short tutorial for him]

Good move! I hope you enjoy your first mac!

A good site for many applications is http://www.versiontracker.com
You can find a lot of more or less useful stuff there, most of it is shareware or free.

An in my opinion good monitoring widget is istat pro, you can download it in the widget section on the apple homepage.

If your machine has any problems, I'm sure you'll notice it rather soon. Of course it would suck to send it back, but well nothing is perfect and that's what the warranty is for. But at first let's hope everything is fine.

Check for dead pixels right away, and also try to burn a CD and a DVD and see if your burner is ok.

Welcome to the Mac Experience - it should be a great transition for you. However, I am wondering how you have been visiting this site for some time and state: "Although I haven't heard any problems regarding MBPs..."

Many MBP problems have been posted here in painfull detail for quite some time. You may want to read the threads - they are educational in so many ways.

The 15" has been known to have some LCD display crappiness.

really? you are all over this board and you don't know this? I went through a few computers and they were all poor displays. Very uneven--blotchy. I sent them back and let Apple know about it very thoroughly. there is no sparing with the MBP line. at this time, it's crap for graphic professionals. i think matte 17" may be the best choice, though still sub quality.

Oops - yeah but I thought those were mostly isolated issues....

It's a 15". Again, I thought the display problem was resolved or something - my mistake....


Hmm... So :

1. DVD Burning : will do..
2. HDD Noise : is the laptop supposed to be absolutely silent? - You have to understand I don't have it yet - so it's hard for me to tell if the noise is unusual...
3. Dead Pixel : black spots ? If one or two is ignorable - then I could live with it.
4. Uneven Back lighting :

Is there any way to run a memory test or check if it's getting too hot - without installing any tools... ?
