I'm using my third MBP now. This time I used the computer for about an hour with zero problems. I was the happiest man alive.

Then I installed the 10.4.6 update. Immediately upon restarting, the whine began. I am considering getting a replacement and never updating, but that would just be stupid.

What does everyone else think?

So THAT'S what's causing the whine to be on some models and not others!!!

The MYSTERY IS SOLVED. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

There are so many factors that decide what happends that you never know what could be causing it. I am positive that there is no such thing as randomness in this world, and this is proving me once again.

Use the software restore CD's to go back to 10.4.5, or whatever was on the CD's (could be 10.4.4) and don't update until Leopard. You don't need those updates anyway.

THANK YOU.

hate to bust your bubble, I updated to 10.4.6 and she perfect. no noise no whine...

I'm on 10.4.6 and I have the whine occassionally with the power adapter in and out. Everything else is fine to my understanding so far. If there is another (more major) problem I will go to apple care, but until then, I won't return it.
