MBP-not worth it?

hi!

last monday my windows notebook crashed, for the third time in 3 months. now i am considering to buy a new notebook. i was sure that my next computer is going to be a mac again (had an imac before), but comparing the mbp with other manufacturers really surprised me.

ie: a fujitsu siemens 15 inch machine: Core 2 Duo 2,2 GHz, 2GB RAM, 160 GB + --->ATi HD 2300 max. 1024 MB graphics <----, costs 1100€ less then the mbp 15 inch (2,4 GHz).

:confused:

osx and design are not worth 1100€ to me. is the mbp really worth that much? spending all that money and already being outdated? what is it that i don't get?

Pardon me if I am mistaken, but is the ATi card have 1GB worth of VRAM? Also, how heavy is the machine?

:cool: because of osx and the design. still i'd want a 2000+ machine to be ahead of a 1000 one, at least the month i buy it....

If OS X and the design are "not worth it" and you consider the MBP to be "outdated" why are you even posting this here?

Clearly you've made up your mind already.

Go and buy your Windows PC and we'll see you back here in a few months.

That Graphics card does not have a gig of vram on it. also the 2300 is a low end card...Low end. I dont care what you pair it with you wont be able to play anything but 2D side scrollers...

The MBP costs more than an identically equipped PC.. why?

PC are commodities, and the Mac is not. It is a specialized computer, much in the mold of a console. very similar and controlled hardware that Apple can design software around.

Mac OS X buries windows on most levels, and the MPB is a very attractive design. Whether its worth it to you is a matter of choice.

To me it is...

Holy hell I never heard of a laptop machine having a 1GB of VRAM, selling for 1000 euros.... and weighing in at 3kgs.... this is something I gotta see. If true, this may be a nice deal. Do you have a link that we can look at?

If that is really important to you, then you're probably better off not buying a Mac then.

Otherwise you'll get frustrated every time you see a cheaper kit.

And if you're frustrated, you're probably not going to like your new Mac.

If you are looking for additional "major" reasons besides the OS and design, here are a couple that immediately comes to mind:

  • Virus free - relative to Windows machines
  • LED back lit screens - bright and even lighting
  • Magnetic power connector
  • iLife / iWork
  • Size/Weight - thin and light
  • Exclusivity

I guess it would also help if you gave us an idea of what you plan to use your next notebook for. All these reasons could be moot.

i'm posting, because i would like to hear what others think. i'm not an expert or something even close, but i just wonder if anybody else thinks that spending 2400€ on a mbp is too much, when low end machines have newer graphics...

Sure it will do the job, but as everyone else has stated no OSX.

The graphics sound good but how it actually works out in real life will probably be something different. Looks to me like its only 128MB of actual graphics processing.

Coming to a Mac forum your going to get a biased view, I would say get the Macbook Pro for many reasons, but if thats the laptop you want go and get it.

Hope its a good machine for you.

And buying a MBP isn't really about graphics. It's the best looking (the notebook itself) notebook I've ever seen. It's fast. Has a great screen, at least I think it does. It sounds great, best notebook/laptop speakers I've ever heard. Plus, it's a Mac! Mac's are far superiour then Windows PC's.

i'm just comparing. as i said i would go for the mac, but only if it really pays out... you guys get what i mean? or is this kind of thing a no-go-topic...;)

look... i'm asking all this stuff, because i really feel like missing out something. why isn't buying a mbp really about graphics?

On the surface Mac's are more expensive. Once you compare apples to apples (no pun intended) and include things like OS X's ease of use, the lack of viruses/spy/malware, the fact that things 'just work', the fact that they don't crash all the time and the applications such as iLife and iWork, you'll see (and don't take my word for it, Google it) that the price difference is small.

Mac's tend to last longer too so you need to factor the initial price into that.

When you buy a Mac, you're more buying into a lifestyle, rather than just buying a plain old workhorse. Generally Mac owners own them because they enjoy using them, not just because we have to get something done.

So there's a lot more to consider than just price.

Honestly though, if what you need is a good old fashioned workhorse and you're not interested in the 'aura' (for want of a better word) that you get from using a Mac, then go buy a PC.

They are worth the money, pretty much anyone on here will tell you that.
 
You buy a computer for the overall experience, how well it runs programs, and how user friendly it is. Everything just feels right with a Mac, you know.
And I find most laptops/notebooks very ugly, except some Sony Vaio's maybe..

This sounds a bit like a total fanboi post.

Agree with best looking, agree its fast,

"Has a great screen, at least I think it does" ok thats not a great observation although many people have commented on how good the screen on mine is,

definately not the best laptop speakers, but very good ones and it can also be a windows PC if you want it to (or it has to be darn it - in my case)

I can definately see where you are coming from bbcxx, the Mac is definately a great choice of computer and is worth the extra money, you save in other areas getting the Mac, antivirus etc.

The FS laptop name that I gave was that the right one by any chance??

i had a mac before and i have no problems with giving up an lifestyle, when i pay more then it is worth.
please, don't get me wrong i love macs and osx... i just want the best one. i mean ..the best my wallet can afford...
