MBP Old 2.6 or New 2.4

I'm looking at purchasing a 15" MBP with a matte display to replace a Dell 153x. I will be mainly using it for web browsing, word processing, a few PC programs using Fusion or bootcamp and some photo editing. What would you recommend?

Old 2.6
2GB
160 GB HD
Nvidia 8600M 256MB
$1850

or

New 2.4
2GB
200GB HD
Nvidia 8600M 256MB
$1999

You just have to ask yourself if the new multi-touch, 1 mb less of L2 cache, .2 Ghz less clock speed, and 40 GB more of hard drive space is worth $149. With the info you have provided I would say no, but it would also be pretty easy to justify paying an extra $149 for the latest.

I'm currently using the base model 2.2 Ghz SR MBP and have no problems doing any of the things you listed above. Office 2008 is speedy, Camino and Safari are both incredibly fast at browsing web pages, even Windows Vista runs great (though I still prefer Mac OS X) as well as Office 2007. I personally would say get the older model and then use the savings for 4 GB of ram.
 
In benchmarks of Penryn vs. Merom, the old 2.6 performed pretty much equally to the new 2.5, and beat the new 2.4 for sure. I'd say get the 2.6 and spend the money on RAM or a new HDD.
 
Thanks for all the input. You guys are echoing my thoughts exactly. With the extra $$ I can increase the RAM and even afford Applecare. Unfortunately, the 2.6 refurb. that was in the Applestore this morning was snatched up. I'm sure more will be on the way.

purchased the refurb SR MBP 2.2 last night..
i'll be using the savings for something else.

i don't know if it's just me.... but i prefer having an EXTERNAL hard drive.. and a HUGE hard drive at home.. my laptop is basically empty... well there's itunes and some " current" work stuff that i need..

my reasoning is, in case i lose my portable, i don't want other people to get all my years of work etc..
well i guess that's just me!:D
 
and i would go for the new one because of the multitouch.
160 or 200 MB is something, that doesn't matter.
I need several external TB anyway. 100MB locally is enough for me.
And 2.6, 2.4...who cares?

But this multitouch. I'm using the Rev A MacBookPro which introduced the double-finger scrolling.
That changed my work behaviour massively. I'm cursing everytime I'm using an old machine or a PC...ok, I'm cursing in front of a PC anyway :)

If I only would have the new features as well...But unfortunately this will never be a software update...

Therefore go for the new one :)
 
There was a 2.6 refurb in the Apple Store this morning. I missed it :( There will be more.
