My situation is this, I already have a 2019 27in 5k iMac with 40gb of ram that's running its OS off a nvme thunderbolt3 500gb external ssd with 2800mbps read/write speeds that I have velcroed to the back of the stand. I also have a 2012 refurbished 13in MBP that I got in 2013 after I was blacked out and drunkenly pissed on my then 15in MBP. It has had two sata cable failures that I've had to replace myself both times, and more recently decided to wipe it and start from a brand new machine because it was slower than a snail. It's operating fine currently, but because of its unreliability, I'm ready to move on.
I've never had an iPad before, and never really saw the use of it. I currently do pretty much everything off of my 7 plus and would rather use that over my MBP, as I truly rarely ever pick up my MBP, though I put it in my bookbag every day before my commute. My issues with it were having to carry around that bulky charger and honestly, this thing is like 4-5 pounds, so kinda heavy and annoying to carry. If I'm home, these days I'll always go to my desk to use the iMac, whether that's recreationally or for productivity. Which I honestly don't like cause I have **** posture and would prefer to lie down. But it's good in that I kinda feel locked in to do work when I'm sitting there. Again, I'd say nowadays maybe the percentage of usage is 15% iMac 85% iPhone 7 plus.
These 2020 iPad Pros, however, are making me feel like bucking the traditional route and using that as my laptop. I'd get the 12.9in. Or should I scrap that idea and get a new 13in MBP/Air? Do you think the current hardware in the iPad Pros will last a long time, so that the only question of improvement lies in the software updates? Are the current 13in specs underwhelming, so that it wouldn't make sense to get a new MBP now and instead wait for the 13in specs to catch up with Apple's other products? Do I need a macbook if I have an iMac at home? If I already use the iPhone so much, would it be more beneficial to get an iPad over a macbook? Will the iPad be able to reliably run Microsoft Office and other productivity apps for teachers? On the go, what advantages would the MBP have over the iPad that I would absolutely have to have on the go instead of waiting till I get home to do whatever that was on the iMac? I would be getting the iPad Pro 12.9 in with a magic keyboard and apple pencil. The thing I wish the iPad had were thunderbolt3 ports, is that a deal breaker? Or is usbc good enough and universal enough these days? Can the iPad functionally function as a portable laptop these days, and if not, will it just be a matter of iPadOS becoming more refined?
