MBP or MBA

I now have a MacBook Pro thats getting to be around 3 years old and i want something new for September- uni begins.
So i am wondering, since i have heard that the new MBA is no where in sight-
is there a new MBP coming out this fall??
and if there is, could someone link me... cause umm i havent heard of it yet
if there is should i get the new MBP or the already out MBA (since the next version is yet to be heard of)
I am a student so i use the basics- itunes, internet, play some games, word, etc...
the only thing that worries be about the MBA is the memory =@
so please let me know your opinions = )

If you're not in too much of a hurry, I'd recommend waiting for back to school period to end. This is when Apple clears inventory and refreshes their line up. (hopefully)

The MBP has a solid design, a host of ports, and amazing processing power!

The MBA is only in it's first iteration, and people on these forums seem to be having some issues with it. Also, it's not really a multitasking machine. You definitely cannot play any games on it. And I'd rather have something sturdier for college use.

I say go for the MBP! You'll save some money and get a better performance. There's some real good deals going on on refurb MBPs right now!

It has the same IGPU as the MacBook. Are you saying that the MacBook is worthless for games?

You have to compromise a lot with Integrated graphics. And yes, the X3100 is absolutely worthless, even for casual gaming.

yeah i also have friends with not too grerat experiences with the MBA-
i just travel a lot so the light weight- and ofcourse it looks awesome

I really hope so! I'm personally waiting on the Montevina refresh to replace my trusty PowerBook G4. If you're not in a hurry, you'd definitely want to wait for the refresh, if there's one!

I own both. The MBA is terrific for your uses minus perhaps the gaming thing. I don't have interest in playing games on the MBA but it does hold its own in Aperture. The thinness is really fantastic once you tote it around; much better for lounging around the house than the MBP.

Just buy the macbook air,

I bought one coming off a old mbp also.
It'll be fine. The weight alone should be awesome for school.
I say that because I went to a UC which meant I always had long distances to walk to get to the next class because of the large campus. That sucked with the mbp! I don't know what kinda campus your going to, but either way you'll probably want to explore it when your there which means you'll be carrying stuff with you all the time and the savings in weight are probably worth it.

as others have said, go with the air.

for your purposes i would usually suggest a plain macbook, but since you are going to uni you need something a bit more portable..

the air really is a good looking laptop, and all your friends will be in awe!

I'm currently in a similar position and I'm buying a mac on Saturday (No tax in VT day!) but I've seen so many issues with the pro (audio, video and some other random ones) and the only issues with the air seem to be core shutdowns when under heavy loads for SOME people and usually on beds or carpets or something. The Air seems more solid than the MBP currently and I've got a sick desktop (see sig) so the airs legit for me too.

Go for the air.

No one knows for sure when a refreshed/redesigned MBP is arriving. Apple will probably ride the iPhone furor for a while and odds are on a MBP redesign by years end and perhaps a MB, too. Playing the waiting game is always a gamble and you'd probably be better off just buying a computer when you really need it.

unless your idea of gaming is brickbreaker and solitaire, then I would highly recommend the MBP. It's a great machine, very portable, very powerful, very sleek.

I was a long time MBP user and recently bought the Air. Its been about 2 days now on my Air and yes, its surely not as fast as the MBP but I would in no way classify it as slow. Between the two, I prefer the Air simply because of its portability. The battery life is also better on the Air and it runs MUCH cooler than the Pro.

What I dont like is that Air takes a LONG time to recharge. Also, since I am connected to an Exchange Server, I prefer using Outlook in Parallels instead of Entourage and while I wont say that slows down the Air a lot, I did notice that my battery life went down from 4 hours to 3 hours with Parallels in the background. It could've been something else as I only have the Air for a couple of days but those are my initial impressions.

I'm probably going to upgrade to an SSD drive once the prices come down as that will surely boost the performance and hopefully increase a bit of battery life as well.

i prefer macbook air. Ask yourself, do you carry your laptop everyday ? Macbook air is light and slim and thats the factor. Go for air

For what it's worth - I just traded my MBP for a MBA and couldn't be happier!
