MBP Paint Peeling

Just tried cleaning the area between the keyboard and mouse pad and some paint peeled just under the option key. I know that others had similar problems. Anyway to solve this?

Another problem is that I have 2 dead/stuck pixels. They just appeared 2 weeks ago.

I don't have the apple care, but I am still in the first year. If I took it to apple, would they do anything about these issues?

Apple usually doesn't repair cosmetic issues.

As for stuck pixels...those are common on LCD panels. Many people don't even realize they have one or two because they can be stuck off (rather than stuck on). Most manufacturers won't even consider replacing a panel with <5 stuck pixels.

Also, the higher the resolution, the more likely it is that you'll have a stuck or dead pixel.

One thing is for paint to peel off in areas that are used heavily, such as the palmrests, but I think Apple will fix it when it peels off in a weird place like between the palmrests and the keyboard.Why couldn't they just make that area real metal too???? Apple makes some really dumb decisions some times. It's amazing how a company so particular with design is so prone to make choices that directly contradict their overall philosophy of form and function.

Most of the MBP is aluminum. However, the thin strip between the palmrests and the keyboard is plastic coated with aluminum colored paint - the strip that dips down toward the keyboard...

The palm rests are aluminum, it's thin slanted bit at the bottom of they keyboard that's plastic I guess.

I've heard of people who experienced 'pitting' of the palmrests, but that's not the same as peeling of paint. The palmrests are aluminum with no paint so no need to worry about that.

Actually, I was more worried that it would continue onto the palmrests I can now see that there is a small/tiny gap between the top/palmrests and the bit under the spacebar. If it only peels there I am not that bothered.

It doesn't really look like plastic to me. More paint came off, and I can now see that the material, whatever it is, is all shiny,... just like aluminium.

That's interesting. It probably isn't aluminum though, otherwise Apple wouldn't have covered it in paint. Wonder what it is....and why it isn't aluminum?

Plastic is cheaper.

I wonder why they even have that area there? Its just like a handy ramp for dust and debris to slide under..Why not make the bezel flush with the keys? Right up to the bottom of the keys...

edit: I just thought of it: to get the cool lighting effect when the keyboard lights up...

• Paint began to peel off that area for me not long after having it, (against the wall where the slope and palm rest meets)
• Paint started to peel off the rim of the power button, so I peeled all the paint off the rim section for consistency
• My "r" fell off and disappeared, (although on new models the letters are recessed, mine on Rev. A were raised)
• I dropped it from a short height which gave a dint, but no other cosmetic issues
• the left palm rest and edge look dirty, but the metal has pitted slightly and the plastic lip has come away a little in reality
• Paint started to come off the power button itself, so I cleaned it all off here
• After a few months of mainly using with BT keyboard and mouse, (for space I'm sitting at my desk most days now), no other things to report except the other day I was giving the MacBook keyboard a dust down and a little more paint came off the slope this time.

Guess I will begin to steer clear of rev. a models in future too.

The problem has already been discussed in this thread.

Basically, they replaced the top case 3 times. When I saw the problem was coming back, I got a rev 2. The paint is becoming darker and darker again, until it eventually peels off, but as opposed to the rev 1, it looks like it will take more time cause the machine is cooler.

It's definitely a design flaw and Apple has only ignored the problem so far.

Buy touch up metallic paint. Apply with Q-tip or a pointed object, such as a toothpic.
