MBP Quandary...Help!!!

Okay, so after weeks of reading about all of the MBP horror stories, last week I headed-off to two local Apple stores to do some research. Unfortunately the Apple employees weren't of much use, as I found that the people who frequent these forums know more about the hardware Apple is selling than the Apple-ites themselves. They looked-on in amazement as I placed my ear to each machine in the store, where I discovered that ALL of the display machines (regardless of processor speed) had the "whine". Of course, the Apple-ites had never heard of this sound and only one was curious enough to see for himself (I suppose it's easier to sell faulty computers with a clear conscience). Anyhow, inspite of all logic, I decided to purchase one anyway!!! For the record, I don't know what I was thinking. I just crossed my fingers, slapped the plastic down and prayed for a "good one". Afterall, I NEEDED a laptop - and they looked amazing.

Now one week later, and two Mac Books later ("whine", warped casing/lid, volume trouble, crashes, etc.) I'm kicking myself for this clearly stupid decision. I'm now faced with returning exchanging the computer for a third machine and don't know what to do??? I have lost all faith in landing a trouble-free MBP. Gone is my rock-steady 20" iMac G5 (sold to afford this beautiful mess of a computer) so I need to walk out of the store with something (anything!) so I don't loose my mind, music and more. I share this computer with my gf who is suggesting a mini and a new macbook, so we have two computers and less duels. The trouble with that is that we would need two monitors - one for the mini and another for use with the laptop at home for design work. AHHHH! So any suggestions? I would be most appreciative. Thanks.

I would take the macbook back and get them to fix the machine or give you a replacement. I don't know how much more you are wanting to spend, so I can't suggest a mini as well. Seems rather expensive. I have had my MBP 2.0 for a couple weeks now and I have the whine, but I haven't sent it in yet, as it doesn't effect computing.

You see to have had more problems than I have. What are you doing with your machine? lol. I love the MBP and hope it all works out for you....just keep taking it back and getting them fixed. Sooner or later you'll get a great one!

No, no. I cannot afford to simply purchase a mini in addition to keeping the MBP. I meant that I will need to leave the store with another type of computer (if I don't simply exchange the MBP again) so that they can import the contents (or my entire life!) via the migration asst. My gf's thought was to return the MBP and get a mini instead. Then pick-up a lower priced Mac Book (iBook) later this month (or whenever they get around to releasing them.

which version did you get, the 2.0 or the 1.83?

if you got the 2.0, I'll trade you my problem-free
1.83 model straight up if all you have is the whine.

mine doesn't do this. I don't have any of the problems
that other are reporting except a lot of heat, but only
when doing really processor-intensive tasks in apps
that are running through Rosetta.

I have the 1.83Ghz model as well.

well, i finally got up close and personal
with my macbook pro and I did notice
a really small whine, but i had to put the
back of my computer up to my ear to
actually hear it. After weeks of using the
computer, I never noticed it until now.
Maybe that whine was just the fan running
low. I don't know. I just never had any
of these problems that are being reported.

I hope you come up with a good solution!

Just got my 2.0GHz MBP the other day, and I haven't had a single problem. I do hear a VERY slight whine that I guess people are referring too...but its hardly noticeable, unless you are really trying to hear it...

There is hope...I would swap it out at least one last time...ask for one from the latest shipment.

I never understood why people call this a "whine." Mine sounds more like a high-pitched hissing sound than a whine.

It really doesn't bother me though.

Two ways to get around the whine. Start Folding on your Mac when it is plugged in. This will use both cores (if you download the script to tell F@H to use both cores) or you can download the mirror widget, launch the widget, then close it.

There, problem solved. No more HISSING core.
