MBP Questions from a Mac n00b

Asked these to an Apple Expert.....however.... something tells me that some of these guys are not an expert as much as I would like to believe....

I was wondering if anyone could answer these for me truthfully.

1. If I install Windows via Boot Camp, and then I upgrade to 10.5 theoretically will the Boot Camp and my version of Windows still work without me having to acquire another copy?

2. When I upgrade from 10.4.10 to 10.5 will all of my files and information be safe during the upgrade process?

3. (duno if this this is still a legitimate question with recent rumors) With Mac going to the XFS+ or whatever file format with Leopard, with the software that I just bought, like the Office Suite still work? It says on the box that it only supports the one file format and quite obviously this is the current one and not the future one.

4. Does anyone have any update on my 7200 RPM hard drive that Apple has left us out in the dark about? I need to know before I go crazy. A month isa little nuts. The lady on 1800myapple did not tell me that when I ordered that it would be delayed.

5. Is the Apple Care I ordered an actual product that will ship to me house or is that something that will just be there when I need it? I haven't gotten any information about it since I ordered it.

What annoys me is that Apple sent all my stuff out. my printer, my software, my iPod, and now it all has to sit here and collect dust for the next month because it is all useless in the mean time. Thanks apple...

1. Yes boot camp will work w/o getting the new version, but it has several improvements detailed in the keynote (switching without rebooting is nice). Also, there is no impact on windows with a boot camp upgrade, BC is simply a means to run windows, it will not impact the OS. Plus, BC is free so I would just go for it.

2. 99.99% safe, but you should always back up to another place such as external hard drive.

4. Apple has not left you in the dark, they have explicitly stated 4-6 weeks. It's annoying, but not obfuscated.

5. I don't really know, but I have seen boxes in the apple store, but all it would have is a pamphlet with some info and guides for getting help.

If the software says it is compatible with future versions of OS X, it should be fine. That's honestly not an easy question to answer.

As far as AppleCare, you get a small CD size box that has a product key on it and some instructions. You need to follow those instructions to register your AppleCare with Apple. If you don't do that within 365 days of purchasing your Mac, the Applecare will be void for that machine.

Apple care is an online registration. You will get nothing in the mail, or worded in another way, you won't get anything in the mail.

I just got to conflicting reports here....

Should I be contacting Apple regarding not getting an Applecare box in the mail or not? One says I get something, someone else says I don't. If I don't how do I go about using it when I need it?

My understanding is that Applecare will be registered for you if you order both it and the system from Apple.com at the same time, and otherwise you have to register it manually. Obviously you'd want to double check that though!

Regarding Office, in all likelihood the current OS X versions will continue to work under 10.5.

If you can, I'd recommend holding off until Office 2007 comes out, probably later this year, so you don't have to buy it twice. You could try using OpenOffice.org in the mean time. But Office 2004 should run fine under 10.5 also.

I was worried about Office, because I will not know if it will not work on Leopard until October/November-ish. If I have to upgrade at that point I'd be a little pissed at the fact that Mac did not warn me about this ahead of time when I ordered it. Of course I would end up upgrading because I don't have a choice at that point if it doesn't work, but it would not suprise me. It would be the second time in two weeks Apple will have chosen to leave out a critical peace of information from me.

So far me switching to Mac, I have yet to say the quote "so far soo good" it just seems touch and go right now with them.

Shortly aftering ordering the AppleCare you should receive a confirmation via e-mail followed by a shipment notification by e-mail. Like an above poster said, you'll receive a small CD sized book with the pertinent information regarding registering your product for AppleCare. And let's be realistic, if Apple were to hold off shipping products that were bundled with purchases i.e. iPods, printers, & software, there'd be just as many people pissing and moaning. Frankly it's just good business to ship whatever is in stock to complete a customers order than to hoard and stockpile until the last minute when everything can go out.

So should I be worried that I did not receive a box in the mail yet even though everything else is here?? It says the order is complete....but I did not get anything...I did get a shipping confirmation though.....

I think Fedex is delayed drastically....everything is here...and yet it says shipped.... and not Complete.....the only thing that is complete......I did not receive....

How long ago did you place your order? Was both the MBP and AppleCare purchased on the same invoice or was it split?

I got my AppleCare box in the mail when I ordered it, but I did not order my MBP and AppleCare at the same time.

This is what happened for me, I got my AppleCare in the mail. You can look up your serial number on apple.com and see if it has AppleCare associated with it. If it does, Apple took care of it for you. If not, you may simply want to call Apple.
