Still trucking along with my 12" macbook m5 which serves me fine (despite the battery and some lag). However, been waiting for the right time to upgrade for reasons some might deem not worth the price.

The logical route would be the air but to be honest I am just not a fan of the design, screen, etc. I was going to get a 13" m1 mbp which seems like a great deal but at this point with the disappearance of the touch bar, older design, only 2 tb ports it just seems like it would be smart to put up the extra money for the 14".

This brings me to the MBP which is now on sale for $250 off. I have no problem affording it, but would like to wait until my birthday in June to really splurge on product like this. Thoughts?

Apple’s Back to School sale last year gave $159 off in addition to the edu discount.

I doubt you will find a better deal than 250 off.

But what do you mean by really splurge? You are unlikely to find much of a deal on custom builds.

Poor choice of words on my part. I meant in terms of I don't do much heavy intensive GPU / CPU tasks. That's why most would recommend the MBA / 13" MBP M1 / Ipad. However everything else (design, screen, webcam, etc.) seems like a good move for me.

Agree that $250 off base 14" M1 Pro is pretty good, and unlikely to get any better. In general, I've found sales on Amazon (or similar retailers) for Macs are fairly sporadic, don't really follow an obvious pattern. So agree that it's hard to try and anticipate getting a better sale later on closer to your bday.

If you don't need the power of the new M1 Pro/Max, but can afford it, I definitely think the base $1999 14" M1 Pro (8-core/14-core/16gb/512gb) is really nice bang-for-buck to get the newer MBP body design with better screen, speakers, etc.

Gotcha. The base 14" is only 550 more than the 16/512 MBA, which means that with the sale you are only paying 300 more to get all this nice things.

You said you have no problem affording it at $250 off which is a pretty good deal so just get it. There are always going to be sales and if you got a good deal now there may be a better deal later or may not be. The main thing is you can afford it and want it. Chasing after the best price is a fools errand because by the time you get the "best" price there will be a new model being released very soon. If you need the MBP now and there is a decent sale then get it and stop looking at prices and enjoy your new machine!!
